A/V is an exhibition and performance space.
A/V represents nothing less than a radical rethinking of the notion of artistic space. Our mission is to reflect the wide range of the contemporary arts today, from photography, painting, and sculpture, to contemporary classical and electronic music, to noise art, multimedia installation, and public art. Equal parts art gallery, concert hall, and electronic music studio, we aim to provide an open and flexible space that welcomes a diversity of genres and breaks down the distinctions between high and low art.
A Brief History
A/V began life as The All-Purpose Room, an exhibition and performance space founded by musicians Heather Gardner, Lynn Hileman, and Kevin McFarland, and visual artist Jack Zazlo. The APR opened its doors on May 23, 2003 with a mission to present the best innovative art and music in Rochester, and for the next year we hosted a wide variety of shows featuring contemporary classical music, electronica, painting, photography, and multimedia installation.
Kevin, Jack, and Heather left the APR in spring and summer of 2004 to pursue their own goals and visions, and we were joined by longtime APR collaborators Kate Laux, Keith Sanders, Graham Saathoff, and Joe Tunis. In the Fall of 2004, fellow collaborators Cameron Farash and Mike Twohig joined the group. And then in the Winter of 2004, Marc-Charles McNulty joined the group. More recently, in 2005 Kate and Keith left A/V and moved to Montreal, and visual artist Andy Gilmore and musicians David Merulla and Chris Reeg joined the A/V team. In 2006, Marc-Charles McNulty left the space, and artist/musician Scott Oliver joined the group.
Current active members of A\V are Lynn Hileman, Joe Tunis, Graham Saathoff, Mike Twohig, Cameron Farash, Chris Reeg, Andy Gilmore, David Merulla, and Scott Oliver. More information about current curators and their contributions to A/V can be found at
their webpage
In order to reflect the growing civic orientation of the APR, a new non-profit arts organization, All-Purpose Arts, was formed in August 2004. Our goal at APA is to promote the contemporary arts in Rochester by providing a flexible venue for their performance and presentation, and to raise public awareness of the arts offering instructional programs in art and music, and by bringing the arts to the Marketview Heights Neighborhood. We re-named our gallery A/V, and are focused on presenting more new art and music than ever before.
Note: It seems there is some controversy about the history of av space for reasons unknown to me. Please be respectful when making corrections, and clearly note how/why/what is being changed/updated.Thanks! -Far

2007-01-10 17:15:54 On their website, the name is sometimes listed as A|V and sometimes as A\V, but never A/V —AlexanderGartley
