I came to Rochester to attend the University of Rochester in 1997 and stayed, eventually becoming a University employee. My partner and I are homeowners in the 19th Ward and proudly support AIDS Rochester,
Interfaith Action, the Seneca Park Zoo, Lamberton Conservatory, 19th Ward Community Association and
Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley.
I am usually on RocWiki several times a day and am currently a member of the AdminGroup.
On Saturday March 1, 2008, I put my partner on a plane to begin the process of relocating us to Chicago, Illinois. This transition will take over a year and I will still reside in Rochester for at least that long. I intend to remain active in the RocWiki community during this process.
I have been a PADI certified scuba diver since 1995, but I don't enjoy diving up here where the water is cold. Some of the cooler things I have experienced underwater include racing a sea turtle (and losing horribly, those suckers are fast!), watching cuttlefish mate and swimming through a school of feeding sharks. Most of my diving has been in the Eastern Caribbean, but I have done some diving off the Atlantic Seaboard and along the Gulf coast of Mexico. The photo on my C-card is highly amusing to all who see it. Sadly, I don't look all that different today.
I'm taking "Modern Social Theory" and "Theories and Debates in Anthropology." The former has me reading Smith, Marx, Freud, Weber and Foucault. The latter has me watching films and reading articles with such words and phrases as metonymical, elegiac, scopophilia, topos, environing, Manichean, Hawksian, aphorism, and homo ludens. At least those were the ones I had to look up. Thankfully, my reading for Thursday's classes is "light" - only 100 pages of dry academic and 18th/19th century prose. My reading assignments for Tuesday are a lot heavier.
In Memoriam
Gryffin, you were a sweet, cantankerous and wonderful
quaker parrot. I loved you and I shall never forget taking you on adventures as we did laundry together. I shall never forget your favorite song. And I shall never forget you. Rest in peace.
Gryffin is a fuzzy green monster bird,
Fuzzy green monster bird, Fuzzy green monster bird, Gryffin is a fuzzy green monster bird, And Gryffin is a fuzzy green monster, monster bird. (Hmm... why is [[BR]] malfunctioning?)

2008-01-20 11:13:03 Dave - I posted under Merchants Grill because of the previous comment on that business. You can move it where ever you would like. It is two comments rolled into one. —BigPun
2008-02-25 15:03:07 Hey, Dave:
I might be interested in starting up a fundraising run in the next year,
either spring or fall. Anyways, we can talk about this sometime. —JustinSukiennik
2008-04-10 14:20:38 I installed your greasemonkey scripts. They are quite useful. :) —JoannaLicata
2008-05-12 20:37:57 You owe the sysadmin two
beers. ;-) Apologies for your userpage getting eaten by the migration script; that'll teach me to not kill memcached after dropping the database... -rt —RyanTucker
2008-05-13 19:14:48 It tended to eat people who mucked around too much with groups, yes. :-) I think that was the deciding factor in the "eat" vs. "not eat" in the conversion script. —RyanTucker
2008-05-13 19:28:06 Now that you mention it, I've got a porch, a gorgeous evening, a bottle of gin, and some tonic. What the heck am I doing inside? What the heck are YOU doing inside? Screw you guys, I'm going outside.
Just as soon as I create a memcached stats page— no, I'm going outside. —RyanTucker
2008-05-14 10:46:23 The
SVN repository has three new CSS files: common, layout, and style. They have a bunch of new things so the CSS we're running ought to be based off of them, but the color scheme didn't match and uploading the
old RocWiki CSS seems to have taken care of it. What needs to happen is all of the pretty colors and layout stuff from the old RocWiki CSS needs merged into the new Sycamore CSS.
If it helps, I have reason to believe the old RocWiki CSS are based off of
this batch of CSS files, so diff might come in handy.
CSS is strange voodoo :-) —RyanTucker
2008-05-27 13:17:27 With
“lever”, the verb form is “to lever” and the concept (noun) is “leverage”. Unfortunately, English abuse by financial pundits has muddied the usage. I can admit “a useful”. My usage likely comes from the way i say it with a softer long “u” rather than a harder “yoo”. But how can you call me on “arguing obtuse grammar” and not Robert, even when he made the first grammatical edits on my original passage? —JohnLam
2008-05-28 01:55:27 Thanks for the conciliation. The whole passage on Tribe no longer reflects current issues and needs updating anyway. —JohnLam
2008-06-03 03:27:32 Dave, can you explain to me why you moved "Water Front Food" to the "Guides" section? Why did you leave "Street Meat" on the front page but removed the very useful summertime addition of "Water Front Food"? Makes no sense to me. I also don't understand why "Optimism"/"Pessimism" belong on the front page but "Local Slang" doesn't? If anything, local slang is more useful than ramblings about why it does or doesn't suck to live here. Granted, the slang page is currently a bit bare and has several offensive entries, but I'd like to grow the article. I'm putting both back until I hear otherwise from you, hope I don't offend! In the future please contact me on my talk page before removing my major edits. I did put some thought into these additions. If we can't come to an agreement on this I'd like to take it to a vote. Thanks, M. —MariahBetz
2008-06-03 15:04:56 Dave, thanks for your responses on my talk page :) I think I'll agree that Local Slang is in an unstable and potentially contentious state right now. Can you recommend any ways to address this? I have been struggling some with the article (although clearly I've been gleeful about some of the harsher entries, eh..) and I'd like to make it good enough to hold on a place in Explore.
I'll also concede the Water Front Food link being removed if Street Meat goes, too. I can't see one being there without the other, as I believe Water Front Food may be more useful from a tourism and community pleasure perspective... —MariahBetz
2008-06-20 23:27:20 I have no particular reason to NOT have a table saw. Is it shiny and dangerous? If so, it sounds like my kind of tool... —RyanTucker
2008-06-21 23:19:02 It wouldn't be a true table saw if it didn't get used as a table ;-) —RyanTucker
2008-06-22 11:21:49 If we do it, I anticipate a decent amount of custom work being required — the target space is rather dimensionally unusual. I don't even think there's enough room for a shower in there. Mostly just looking for a toilet and sink. However, the target space has since been turned into a closet, so I'm thinking the project may well be dead for now. —RyanTucker
2008-07-06 06:19:34 You are welcome for the additions. I am recovering from some surgery on the 1st and had to spend the 4th weekend mostly indoors. —BradMandell
2008-07-09 08:38:07 Dave, RE Antmore issues: It seems RocWiki might attempt a revision of the Welcome Business Owner page to clarify what is in and out of bounds for RocWiki content. RocWiki is best as an Information source, especially of local interest and origin. Maybe some guidelines about Press Release related entries, excessive duplication of detailed material available on the companies website, etc.
2008-07-13 21:05:01 Re Asian Buffet Fact Check - just ate there this evening, brought home the menu and typed in everything directly from it. Sorry about the CAPS, I did not notice - must have hit caps lock instead of Shift. —BradMandell
2008-07-16 01:29:09 As I understand you are the creator of this Wiki, there are a few things that you should be aware of. I have started my own Wiki site. Since there are creative differences, I went my separate ways. I have tried to contact "responsible" admin about the behavior of others on your site, but because I am blocked everywhere, I cannot reach the appropriate people. I want the malicious behavior to stop on my site. I never went nearly as far as the people have gone on this site. They are making lewd comments, defacing my pages, and generally making a mess out of my site. I never actually did that to your site in any way. I never launched guerilla tactics where I was using false IP addresses and signing onto my site. I may have had disagreements with people and basically showing them the walking contradictions that they are and that is about it.
At least one person from your site was not smart enough to use a fake name and he is Peter Boulay or Peter Booolay on my site. I have screen shots of a bunch of things that he posted on my site. Now he represents your wiki page and is a member of your admin staff. Peter along with a few others (who knows could all be him for all I know, but I get a feeling MariahBetz and a few others were in on it) decides to write hate speech and make fun of people's sexuality on a site, that can be construed not only as harassment, but by the RocWiki Admin. Furthermore, it could be interpreted as a hate crime. I have been consulted by my legal advisor. If this activity continues, you and the rest of your community will be prosecuted. I have no qualms spending my time (my friends are pro bono) taking each and every person responsible to court. I have kept screenshots and records of each transgression.
My business partner, who never had anything to do with this, is receiving harassing emails through my wiki site. Dave, I implore you to take the necessary steps to rein in these people or your inaction will cause you to stand with these vandals. I have acted on everything I have done, so don't think this is an idle threat. I don't like the people that are signing up to my site calling me "Anthony wigger" and "antmorelle" and saying I am gay. This is ridiculous. These people are representing this site and you especially. Since you have stayed pretty neutral during these last few bouts, I trust you will make the right decision. You have my email on file. You can contact me there.
Thank you. —AnthonyMorelle
2008-07-16 01:36:10 Let me remind the rest of you that you are messing with a business endeavor. If you in any way want to desecrate my site, I have legal obligations to take anyone to court for interference of that business relationship. This is your only warning. I am also taking steps to report this Wiki to the appropriate authorities. Maybe other established Wikis will frown upon the behavior of admin members and push you out. Based on what some of you have to look forward to in life, this is all you have. I wouldn't push it. —AnthonyMorelle
2008-07-16 17:09:29 I have made backup copies and deleted my messages posted in the Google Group due to sudden spurts of spam to my email address, which I just realized is exposed in the Group. I will post the backup content somewhere?? - I think I may also delete my membership in the Google Group altogether, but I still have the RocWiki addiction page out there and I appear in some "quoted text". —BradMandell
2008-07-22 15:36:54 I don't even know what you did to my tables, but they do look better. :-) Thanks! —RyanTucker
2008-07-22 17:03:04 I believe the answer to your question lies in RachelBlumenthal's comment directly above RxScabin's comment on the Cravings page —AlexanderGartley
2008-07-25 21:40:17 You win today's Made-Me-Dig-Up-The-Dictionary Award for your use of "ameliorate." Congrats! :-) —RyanTucker
2008-07-27 17:58:16 Google Maps provides the facilities to create these user maps, to embed them directly on your webpages, etc. The User Map is also saveable as a KLM file and can be viewed in Google Earth. Since the image retains the Google copyright notice and links to a Google generated and controlled map, there should be no problem. I am currently going through all the Golf courses on RocWiki and adding them to the map. The map entries link back to their relevant RocWiki pages. I will save and upload the KLM file to the Golf page when I have it reasonably complete. —BradMandell
2008-08-02 10:35:14 Thanks for the technical correction Dave (;>}, but the 1000 Goal was Mine and included the images (especially since most of them are ones I actually took just for RocWiki!!! At any rate it was a great run - and mostly in just 1 month!! —BradMandell
2008-08-12 13:52:20 I think the disclaimer is a really great idea and I fully endorse it —PeteB
2008-08-14 11:32:52 I agree it's broken, and it's probably the ' throwing it off. Danged if I know where to fix it, though.
gmap.js doesn't look like it deals with the address string itself, but I could be wrong. E-mail me the info you got from your magic t00lz and I'll see what I see on this end... —RyanTucker
2008-08-18 22:33:46 I sent you an email FYI.... —PeteB
2008-08-18 22:55:20 No no I'm not saying I need it now but was asking if you'd be interested in doing it —PeteB
2008-08-20 14:00:28 Dave: You have helped me with issues in the past. I was wondering what the 'official' policy is on photos. Just googling a photo is probably not good enough without contacting the author, eh? —EugeneCain
2008-08-21 15:51:07 Thank You Dave for your welcome message. This RocWiki really ROCKS!!! I have been using this to choose my weekend activities. —DeepBhatt
2008-08-23 15:21:34 Hi Dave, NewtonNola here. I saw your comment on my RocWiki. I got hacked. I'm still using the newtonnola yahoo address and changed my password. Do you think I need to ditch that yahoo mail account and start from scratch even though I changed my password? Oh and the crooks got about $600 out of one of my bank accounts but i got it all back! some what of a happy ending. Thanks Dave —NewtonNola
2008-08-24 09:24:41 Hi Dave, So nice of you to respond so fast to me! I'm getting a s*** load of spam, you are correct. I hate to sound dumb but what do you mean by "honey pot" status? I do have a couple of other email accounts that I use for not communicating with my friends. The newtonnola one is my primary though. Thank you :-) —NewtonNola
2008-09-22 15:22:50 Hi Dave could you ADOPT your Mini Flame please {:>] —BradMandell

2008-10-07 12:04:56 Hey Dave, sorry to read about your loss. —BradMandell
2008-11-13 23:16:03 I'll withdraw my comment. —PeteB
2008-11-19 11:37:57 Dave, the problem is not with the image itself, but with the revision history of the page - who created it?, when was it created? who edited it? when did they edit it? what part of the page did the photo contributor edit other than the photo? - you would not even know it was a historical page unless you happen to click on the photo and see the dates of its history. Further, the userinfo for the contributors will no longer show their edits to the deleted page. That was my point. —BradMandell
