Exscape Smoke Shop is a head shop located on Monroe Avenue near JD Oxfords. Opened in 2011, the shop carries glass pipes and other smoking accessories. The Rochester location is the fifth Exscape location in New York; there are two in Albany, one in Syracuse, and one in Ithaca.

Exscape is affiliated with and carries the products of Designs By Pyramid, a wholesale glass producer and distributor.

2011-07-06 00:17:16   I have not had a good experience with Exscape. They appear to be a reputable shop stocking recognizable names and hand-blown pieces. However, their products are poorly manufactured; a crack developed in an item from this shop upon first use. For seemingly legal reasons, their customer service in regards to this faulty piece was nonexistent. Upon further research, I found evidence that some of their products are counterfeit, and the owner of the Exscape stores engages in harmful business practices in the areas where new stores open. Further research into the parent company Designs By Pyramid concludes that most of their products are imported from China and are cheaply made imitations of name-brand designs. A simple Google search turns up forum results discussing the quality of their products.

Unfortunately, it's difficult to find reputable information on businesses that operate in a gray area like head shops. I cannot verify the claims in the above article, but after having spoken with other glass blowers in the Rochester area regarding Exscape's products, the claims of counterfeit and knockoff products seem to hold true.

If you're shopping for glass, shop around. Exscape is new and flashy, but there is plenty of quality glass in Rochester, most of it right across the street at Ghost Dog. I do not work for Ghost Dog and am in no way affiliated with them, but I have always been satisfied with their products and their customer service. Do yourself a favor and avoid Exscape. —TonyFolenta

2011-08-17 09:09:44   The glass at Exscape Smoke is affordable and there's tons of options. Between breaking pipes and girlfriends smashing bongs that's nice. Knock off's or not if your paying $150 or better for a water pipe you deserve to loose your money. In the end it's about function. I've never hooked up just because i had ROOR. Thank God there's an alternative on Monroe to the wildly expensive Ghostdog Glass. Show World was that cheap option, but they got pushed out of the old Theater Building by the City. 2012-01-17 02:41:38   I agree I own a smoke shp and I inquired as to some of their pieces and they said it was hand blown and I knew for a fact they were lying cause I have the same stuff that we sell that we tell customes that it is china glass we have a separate case at look ah hookah specifically for hand blown items so people know what they are buying —TheresaDyer

2012-05-11 14:45:12   I have had some mixed personal reviews about this place. I have been in here several times, bought a few pieces and a percolated arm piece for my ZOB water pipe. That's all fine, but my girlfriend recently bought a glass pipe from here, supposedly shatter resistant. However when she dropped it only a foot to the floor from her bed, it broke instantly at the neck, literally 2 hours after buying it, and only after one use. We call that day, Saturday May 5th, and they tell her to come in next thursday to speak to the manager who operates that store. When we go there, he tells us don't let it happen again or he will just go tell us to overpay across the street (mocking Ghost Dog's prices), and then told us that we would be shit out of luck, all of this before he just gives us an identical piece. One, I was hoping for an exchange due to the fact that why would she or I want to use an exact copy of a piece that isn't supposed to easily break, but easily breaks. Secondly he was rude, un-professional and the operator of that store (also the man who sold us this piece the first time), showing terrible customer service and clearly doesn't want us spending our money there. I don't recommend this place unless you are buying attachments for water pipes or it is a well known brand (Roor, Zob, HVY, Crush etc.) —DanGarver

2014-03-07 20:57:57   Possibly the most friendly shop on the ave, makes you kinda laugh at ghostdogs bullshit customer service. Exscape is always filling the display cases with fresh dank glass and their vape selection is on point, you gotta check it out but the store hours on wiki are wrong and they dont open at 9.. why are you trying to cop glass at 9? 2017-02-10 20:24:00   Exscape is my go to smoke shop in rochester. Ive gotten my pax 2, volcano, flo, and multiple hand blown bowls and all my friends shop there too. I've boughten almost all of my pieces there after being disappointed in investment in pieces from smokers choice. The staff is usually extremely friendly and knowledgable with the exception for 1 or 2 people. My advice sign up for the text alerts they have amazing deals constantly. Some things are a little overpriced but after the discount deals they are pretty decently priced. If you are looking for a moderately expensive piece this is the place to be. Always lots of selection. If you want to buy something nicer and in the higher price range then go to ghost dog for a hit man or Sheldon black, but I'd rather buy multiple flo or pure pieces. —Phillyb
