LJ's is a restaurant offering Jamaican cuisine, located on Thurston Road in the 19th Ward.
From
2006-11-15 City:
The food [at the new LJ's] is still awesome. I still suck every oxtail bone dry, and leave only clean bones from brown stew chicken. The steamed whole fish is still my favorite (and one of the best dishes in the city).
Dinners include rice and beans or white rice (go for the former), salad or cabbage (the latter), yams or plantains (a push), and dumplin' or mac and cheese (dumplin'!). Get a large and feed a small regiment.
LJ's has moved next door to its original spot, and expanded to include a genuine, sit-down dining room. It's a lovely space on the corner, with windows on two sides, lots of room, and comfortable tables. Some of the hole-in-the-wall charm might be lost, but who'll miss it?
LJ's will deliver anywhere, though there is a $20 minimum and a $3 delivery charge for out-of-area deliveries. Angela also asked that I stress that they do catering. "Write that down," she admonished me.

2007-06-05 22:17:36 Having moved here from Florida, I was dying to locate a good Jamaican restaurant. After quite a few weeks of anticipation, I went LJ's this evening. I got jerk chicken (small size) for $8 to go. I must admit I am a bit disappointed from the whole experience. They were out of beef patties; the fellow wanted $1 extra to pack the dumplings and gravy in a separate small box; the rice and beans was a little too over-cooked (mushy); and the chicken could have used some more spice. However, I finished my box of food as if I hadn't eaten in a week. For my next Jamaican craving I would like to try Natural Vibes or the Haitian restaurant that serves Jamaican. Irie! —GeorgeJegadesh
2007-11-08 13:26:47 I've been here once but plan to go back. Portions are enormous and everything was excellent. I had the oxtail which was great, and my friend had the Jerk chicken which i tried and also loved. The rice and beans were excellent, along with the cabbage and plantains. Well worth a visit! —GeorgeBluth
2008-01-26 18:10:49 Food's pretty good but not amazing. Worth a try for sure, run by a family that could use more help if the place is going to grow. I had to figure out the check for the daughter running the front counter. haha No credit cards, duh. —DamyHa
2008-04-16 13:29:22 I'd fall in the front door of the place if I tripped on my front step (I can see their roof top from my upstairs windows). I've GOT to try this place after reading the city newspaper review from the link above. I'm a happy 19th Ward home owner and would love to give my business to my neighbors. Definitely on my To-Do list. Look for review here thereafter. —StephanieTodd
