Named after the Asian expression for a [wikipedia]supervisory women 1, Mamasan's is a midscale and well respected Vietnamese- and Thai- inspired restaurant.

History

Mamasan's started out in 1984 in a former donut shop on University Avenue. After years of success there they opened up a second location in 2003 on Monroe Avenue. The original restaurant on University closed in 2008. Mamasan's had also opened an "Express" location at 1330 Mt. Hope Avenue in September 2010 (formerly the home of Mykonos Express), but that closed in the summer of 2012. The Monroe Avenue location closed June 22, 2020 as the building was to be demolished to make way for the proposed Whole Foods Center. During the summer of 2020, they reopened temporarily at their previous "Express" location as they worked on their new location across from College Town. During July, 2021, they opened their permanent location in College Town area at 1400 Mt. Hope Avenue. This location also has a drive thru window for take out orders.

2005-08-23 15:04:10   I'm not sure. Did the one on University close for good? The website still lists it. —JackCalcines

2006-04-20 13:53:37   As of mid-April 2006 it was still open, for weekday lunch only. When it finally closes we will lose the Thai Sour Shrimp Soup and Thai Sour Curry, neither of which is served at the Monroe Ave. location. —MarkJackson

2006-07-28 21:13:11   The rice dishes have a lot of tangy/spicy sauces to choose from. The fried onion topping is great. —BenMargolis

2006-08-31 12:38:04   I am addicted to their Spicy Coconut Soup, but I won't touch much else on the menu. The prices are a bit too high and I would prefer more tradition food. —EllenKelsey

2007-03-22 12:29:35   Love it! The food comes out extremely quickly, and I've never been disappointed by it. For the most part, the menu consists of noodle and rice dishes with various sauces, and you can choose beef, chicken, seafood, tofu, or a few other things. The full menu is up on the website. —RachelBlumenthal

2007-03-22 15:07:33   Why is it so dark in there? I'd like to be able to see the food- which I enjoy. Also, annoying that they give you a pretty meager portion of rice and then charge extra when you ask for more to finish up your curry. —EricLarsson

2007-03-22 17:31:37   The University Ave location was far better, even despite the Monroe's Ave trndy atmosphere. —RichardSarkis

2007-04-08 21:57:03   why upscale when you can't even be comfortable in your clothes to eat comfortably? you can spend less than $10 bucks and come out EXTRA FULL at Pho Duong Dong on Otis Street.. I definitely recommend Pho Dong Dong if you want what Vietnamese food really tastes like! —HuongTran

2007-06-27 14:40:59   The food was OK, but the service was horrible. I was on the one on Monroe Avenue. My father just had heart surgery, and we wanted to make sure what he was about to eat was what his doctor would approve of. When we asked a few questions, the manager started getting angry and threw a few f-bombs around. We left, and the next day called to complain. She went off again, and when we hung up, she *66ed back and started harassing us. DO NOT GO. —DaveMilitello

2007-07-19 09:11:35   I been here about a dozen times and I've always had good service. It has one of the fastest speeds of service that I have ever experienced, and the servers are always welcoming, friendly, and helpful. The sauces are what make the dishes different and amazing. There is also a cool atmosphere with interesting metalwork. —BenMargolis

2008-03-07 16:06:03   Nice place, great food. Reasonably priced. The owner is a sweetheart. —SaRoyal

2008-03-21 17:47:23   I've heard some horror stories about the one of the managers/owners cursing people out and generally being incredibly rude. I wouldn't step a foot inside the restaurant just for that reason. —CatMagro

2008-05-18 14:40:24   Love the mango salad with chicken, and all the daily specials. Also, love Mama .... she's a very warm person. —SteveFont

2008-07-02 11:20:03   A great place. The decor is nice, clean, and modern looking, and the food is excellent. They have the best coconut shrimp in town, and the basil-fried rice with shrimp is fantastic. It is a bit on the pricy side, though. —AFrye

2010-02-09 22:05:35   I was here for lunch about 2 months ago. We ordered 2 different dishes but they had the same "orangey" look to them..what is up with that? The chicken in my dish was so dry. The overall flavour was alright. Also, it is somewhat overpriced relative to other Thai places in town. But it is possible that the pricing is in line with other Pittsford restaurants. It is unlikely that I will be back. —OneLove

2011-02-17 20:38:32   ABSOLUTELY F'ING TERRIBLE!! Take a bowl of brown sugar, add some sriracha, mix in some veggies & you have all their dishes. UGH!! My 1 year old had better food there than the adults with some KRAFT mac & cheese.
I've eaten all over the world anbd never had anything this terrible.
Great decor & people. But what the heck is going on with the food??!? —NishantNair

2011-06-07 18:37:28   Went to the noodle place on Mt. Hope. Broth tasted of boullion. Will not go back —jberna

2011-11-22 18:51:29   I will review both locations, although it's been more than a year since I was at the Monroe Ave. location.

Monroe: I guess you can't really call this place 'Thai' or 'Vietnamese', since it's more of an Asian-fusion place. No, don't get confused by Aja (that place is more of an Asian-pretension place, and a lousy one at that), but think as more of a noodle-based but more true type of Asian food. It's usually pretty good, although the waitstaff is usually clueless, and the owner can get......umm.....volatile at times. Don't annoy her. Trust me.

Mt.Hope: Sorry, but the pho they make here is just plain awful. Unbelievablty bad, in fact. Just, don't tell the owner. Trust me. —Alex-C

2012-07-09 16:38:45   We met some suburban friends at the Monroe Ave location for dinner on a Friday evening last month. Due to some food issues our friend quizzed the server about several of the dishes and he was pretty vague on explanations of ingredients and prep methods. We ended up trying a variety of apps and entrees around the table, all of which were Asian-like dishes but not very authentic of any specific cuisine. All were edible, but not particularly memorable. Beyond the initial vagueness, service was fairly efficient. Prices seem higher than other local Asian restaurants, probably driven by the Brighton/Pittsford location. We did have a long wait to pay and exit as there was some snafu at the cashier ahead of us. Note that I am a fan of the fried spring roll vermicelli salad at the Mt. Hope location for lunch. —jgerek

2012-09-02 00:01:15   absolutely frightening experience

My girlfriend and I visited Mamasan's looking for a new taste of cuisine being tired of the same old same old. The place was busy and it took a while for us to be seated which was fine. However, that is not to say that making us wait a half an hour AFTER we were seated to even order water is acceptable. Waiter was nice, but when we got our food it was terrible. When we asked the waiter if we could pay for that dish plus order something else the actual owner/hostess came over and proceeded to tell us that there was nothing wrong with the dish. She proceeded to yell and curse at us. When I told her that the food was dry and tasteless she literally told me that I was "full of shit". So, if you'd like to pay for terrible food, you'd like to leave very frightened I'd recommend mamasan's. —isaac

2013-02-23 15:56:09   My wife and I just got back from a late lunch/early dinner. Being vegan, it's awesome to see they have a separate vegan menu. The food was pretty good, on par with Aja Noodle, same kind of asian-fusion noodle place deal. The owner was arguing with our waiter though, which, while that did provide some entertainment, it was a little off putting. They were arguing right in the main dining area, in plain sight and definitely in earshot! Then, when we were paying she said the salad we ordered was $6 not $5 and that the waiter wrote it down wrong. Really? Just eat the dollar and talk to the waiter after we leave. Don't you think it'd be better to keep your customer happy than to be petty with your waiter in front of them? It left a bad taste in our mouths and we probably won't be going back, which is a shame because the food was for the most part, satisfying. —BrianHahn

2013-06-02 01:20:10   I made an account just to warn people about this place. Do not pay these people to make food for you. I went with some friends and my girlfriend ordered a dish that was disgustingly spicy to the point where it didn't even have a taste other than bitter. We talked to the owner who started to scream at us in front of the entire restaurant refusing to believe that the food was bad. Absolutely terrible, the worst service I've ever had at a restaurant. —isaacaaron

2013-08-29 09:47:03   Horrible food. Rude staff ... especially the owner "Dr." Joe and his wife. I can attest to the fact that Be Walters has horrible temper. I've seen it in action...not exactly hospitable. I encourage all customers to check their violations with the health department at : [WWW]http://rocdocs.democratandchronicle.com/map/restaurant-inspections Search for "Mamasan's" Ripped upholstery in booths.
