Morningstar Restaurant is a nifty restaurant is in an old car dealership around the corner from Johnny's Irish Pub in the 18th Ward. It's not on a big street, but it's only a block east of Culver Road near the Merchants corner. It's a nifty place, with a small-town everyone-knows-your-name atmosphere, and some great Greek & diner food, and it's reasonably priced. It's pretty new; it's only been open since April of 2005.

2006-09-14 08:04:44 Checked it out for breakfast one Saturday AM when the line for James Brown's (around the corner) was too long. I used to go regularly when it was Sabor Bakery which had the best Spanish pastries in town. Anyhow, it had just opened and the place was mostly empty. The service was slow and the stereo was playing adult contemporary at a volume loud enough that I had to ask them to turn it down. The food was OK, nothing special. I’ll have to go back for dinner and try their Greek food. —ZedOmega
2006-12-20 08:39:54 My go to place for breakfast during the week. Service is quick, and the breakfast special is the best in town. I stop in for a gyro once in a while at lunch, but my favorite offering at Morningstar is the morning meal. Maria is a charming hostess, and Lou does a great job in the kitchen. Grace is probably the city's finest diner waitress. The coffee is always fresh and good. —JackPorcello
2007-07-09 11:55:38 One year later. My above review says their breakfast was OK. Well not any more. My French toast was served using nearly rock-hard stale bread. I couldn't cut it with a table knife it was so hard. My bacon was very under-cooked and after sending it back to the kitchen was returned to me well over-cooked. When you drop bacon on your plate and it shatters, it my bit a bid too done… My over-easy eggs were also very under-cooked. I’m not shy about eating a slightly slimey egg, but at least serve them somewhat cooked! And lastly they added up my bill wrong.
Bad French toast, bad bacon, bad eggs, and a bad bill – that’s 4 strikes and one heck of an easy call.
YOU’RE OUT!
2007-11-15 21:02:51 I continue to frequent Morningstar restaurant, and have not experienced any decline in the quality of food or in the value for the dollar. The diner has a loyal following, and keeps a steady clientele of people from all walks of like.
Sorry you had a bad experience, Zed. So far, however, they keep producing the goods for me. Best place for breakfast in the area besides possibly Jines on Park Ave. —JackPorcello
2007-12-05 16:36:45 I go here for breakfast almost every Saturday and have always had great service and great food. The sausage gravy and biscuits with corned beef hash and eggs has to be the best breakfast ever thought up. Everything else is good too. They'll even put meaty hot sauce over your eggs, home fries, and sausage patties to give you a sort of breakfast garbage plate. Its a winner in my eyes! —GeorgeBluth
2008-05-26 16:40:18 Doesn't look like much from the outside. Inside is very simple too but clean and very bright during the day, lots of windows. Service was pleasant and quick, and the food was good basic diner breakfast stuff. I ordered a platter that came with a salmon fillet and that was a bit dry but it was the only disappointment, they also make breakfast plates with souvlaki and other Greek things, and since that's their background, perhaps I should have stuck to those. In any case it was a nice meal, two breakfasts with 2 coffees (and my plate came with Baklava for dessert) for under $20 before tip. We'll be back, a nice neighborhood place. —DottieHoffmann
2008-07-07 16:49:09 This place is much nicer inside than out. We ate in a pretty large group and we all enjoyed breakfast here. The owner (I think?) was very pleasant also and greeted us as we came in and when we left. —SaraChristine
