Route 31 is an east-west New York State Highway that begins in the west at an intersection with Route 104 in Niagara Falls, spans 10 counties (and passes through the City of Rochester, before it overlaps with Route 5 in the Town of Vernon and terminates at Route 26. The road is one of the longest state routes in NY.
In the greater Rochester area Route 31 is a major east-west artery passing through Orleans, Monroe and Wayne counties. Route 31 also splits out into Routes 31A, 31E and 31F.

Route 31 serves as an alternative, through the canal towns, route from Rochester to Niagara Falls and Canada passing through Medina, Middlleport, Lockport and Lewiston where it intersects with the Niagara Expressway (I190) just south of the Lewiston Bridge into Canada. West of Medina Route 31E is a local road to Middleport.
