Route 5 is a New York State Highway that largely runs parallel to the Thruway in the Rochester area.
Western Segment
New York State Hwy 5 begins in Ripley at the PA/NY border and runs east through downtown Buffalo. A number of streets, all marked as Route 5(!), eventually converge into Main St, which proceeds through Buffalo to Williamsville, Clarence, Pembroke, East Pembroke, Bushville and Batavia.
Rochester Region Segment

Now in the Rochester region, Route 5 continues eastward from Batavia through Stafford, Le Roy (
Photo), Limerock, Caledonia and Canawaugus.
Route 5 merges with Route 20 west of Avon, passing through town and on to East Avon, Lima, West Bloomfield, Bush Corner, East Bloomfield, Bloomfield, Centerfield, South Bloomfield and ending the Rochester Region Segment in Canandaigua.
Eastern Segment
Exiting Canandaigua, Route 20 diverges and Route 5 continues eastward through Geneva, where it merges with Route 20 again. Continuing the drive, we go through Waterloo, Seneca Falls and Auburn, where 20 once again diverges. Route 5 then proceeds through Elbridge and then Syracuse.
In Syracuse, Route 5 becomes a limited access highway and then a local highway again. It merges briefly with 92 in De Witt, but branches off of 92 in Lyndon. On to Homewood, Fayetteville, Mycenae, Chittenango, Canastota, Lenox, Oneida, Sherrill, Vernon, Lairdsville, Kirkland, New Hartford, Utica.
After splitting with 5S, it go on through North Frankfort, North Ilion, Herkimer, East Herkimer, Little Falls, West St. Johnsville, St. Johnsville, Nelliston, Palatine Bridge, Yosts, Fonda, Tribes Hill, Fort Johnson, Amsterdam, Cranesville, Hoffmans, Rectors and Wyatts.
Now nearing the eastern terminus, we pass through Schenectady and enter Albany, where Route 5 is known as Central Ave. At its absolute end (by signage), it is actually a one way street off of Washington Ave at Lark Street. According to NYDOT the street ends at the Hudson River.
