Route 96 is a northwest-southeast New York State Highway that begins as East Avenue in downtown Rochester at East Main Street. Just past Nazareth it loses the East Avenue designation as it becomes Main Street in Pittsford and leaves Monroe County south of Bushnell's Basin near the intersection with Route 250.

Beyond East Avenue
Route 96 is the Main Street in Pittsford and at the intersection with Route 252 and Route 64 it follows the Erie Canal to Bushnell's Basin. Dipping south, it intersects with I-490 at exits 28 and 29 (which is also the easternmost exit on I-490 before the Thruway.
In Ontario County it passes Eastview Mall and Victor and then follows an eastward path (even though it has a N/S designation) passing the Finger Lakes Gaming and Race Track) and East Victor, Manchester, Phelps, Clifton Springs, Unionville, and Waterloo, where it heads south through the Finger Lakes.
Along the southbound track it passes Varick, Romulus, Ovid, Sheldrake Springs, Interlaken, Covert, Trumansburg, Halseyville, Ulysses, Jacksonville,
Ithaca, and Candor. It ends at NY Route 17 in the Southern Tier village of Owego, Tioga County.
