History

St. Mary's Hospital was founded in 1857, by the Catholic Daughters of Charity on the corner of West Main Street and Genesee Street. It was the first hospital in Rochester. In 1863, the main building was constructed and the cornerstone laid by the bishop. It also treated more than 5,000 Civil War soldiers in 1863 as well. The first horse-drawn ambulance was integrated into Rochester by St. Mary's, and in 1915 they purchased the city's first motorized ambulance.

In 1941, St. Mary's built the current main building that stands today, with additions added in later years. $40 million was spent in a 1985 construction and renovation project. In 1996, the hospital won the Foster G. McGaw Prize for community service, as it provided care for the poor and vulnerable.

In 1997, St Mary's was made part of the Unity Health System because of a merger between it and the Park Ridge Hospital, which is now known as Unity Hospital. Today St. Mary's Hospital is known as the St. Mary's Campus, which is part of Unity Hospital.
