Due east of Rochester by about an hour, Syracuse, NY is another city of Upstate New York that strings along the old Erie Canal route. It has many of the same benefits, and problems, of the other canal and manufacturing cities of Buffalo, Rochester, and Albany. Smaller than Rochester, Syracuse was hit harder by the loss of manufacturing jobs, but it continues to soldier on as a university town despite the economic downturn.
