However, the service since then has been inconsistent. First, they tune the bike before you leave, but as soon as I was out of the parking lot the chain started rattling loudly. I turned around and had them look at it. Sure enough, they said, the front derailleur had not been properly adjusted. The remarkable thing is that this happened two more times the same day. Each time, a different mechanic looked at it and each of them said it had not been properly adjusted. Oddly, it turned out that it was just something I was doing as an inexperienced rider (trying to ride in a gear such that the chain was at too much of a diagonal and scraped against the front derailleur cage). I finally figured this out when one of the mechanics (nice guy, small, shaved head) bothered to talk to me about it. The salesmen seem knowledgeable, but I agree they are a bit aloof. And I have to agree that the gentleman another reviewer described as fat is indeed someone I will avoid interacting with for the rest of my life. I took my bike into Full Moon Vista recently for a tune-up and they seem a lot better--they fit bikes that you buy from them, which Towner's did not do, for instance, and they are willing to show and explain to you what they're doing to your bike, and don't act annoyed if you are a novice and generally seem to want to share their customers' enthusiasm. --["Users/AlexFine"]

The big, fat turd that works in the front of the store treated me like crap the whole time I was there, basically inferring through body language, stares, and rude, curt replies that he did not want me there, and that it was a burden for him to answer any of my questions. Well the karma is back at this place because I highly recommend going elsewhere such as Freewheeler's on Mt Hope Ave. The shop might not be as big as Towner's, but at least the owner, Roger, treats you well and will spend more than enough time helping you out and getting what you need. Plus, Roger is more than fair with prices, and even fixes things, and throws things in for free. Help support better business practices by saying NO to Towner's Bike Shop. - Peace. --["MattSnow"]

The first time I walked in there were three guys standing behind the counter playing with a laptop and ignoring everything else. This was fine since I don't like being bothered by salespeople. When I needed something, though, they acted like I was taking them away from something. This happened the next time I went in to buy 2 bikes. They weren't very helpful. The only reason I bought the bikes there is because only they had the Schwinn and Giant bikes recommended by Consumer Reports. When I hit a pothole and needed to fix the rear tire, the salesperson offered me a cheap replacement, relized it didn't fit, disappeared for 15 minutes and told me that they don't have what I needed. It would take a week to order and about $75. I went to another store and got it fixed for $25. --["SimosEconomides"]

I was in there last year looking for a helmet - a rather difficult process, since my head is quite large, and almost nobody stocks helmets my size. I assumed that if anyplace in Rochester would have one, Towner's would be the place. A rather stocky gentleman was the only one in the store - there were no other customers - and he acted as if it was a huge imposition when I asked for assistance. He wasn't even willing to check catalogs to see if they could order one my size. Quite honestly, he was one of the worst clerks I've ever encountered. Apparently he just really wanted to get back to the magazine he was reading when I came in. + + RV & E in Fairport, on the other hand, bent over backwards to find me one that would fit. The clerk was cheerful, helpful, friendly, and obviously quite knowledgeable. In that light, there's no way I would ever consider going back to Towner's. --["RichMulvey"]
