NOTE - 2008 was both a difficult year with medical and family tragedies, but a highly productive year for wiki activities. RocWiki editing got me through the cancer surgery recovery and I look forward to a better 2009 and will be working with RocWiki, Bufwiki, Syracuse Wiki, and other tasks more for the joy of it. |
-
I will make contributions, where appropriate, to the pages I visit and try to find web links for the page.
-
I will work on some Orphaned Pages, Needs Cleanup, Wanted Pages etc. each week

RocWiki Addiction - been there, done that!!
Geographic:
As a Webster (and former Fairport) resident, my main focus will be with Rochester east areas - including Webster, Penfield, Perinton, Fairport, and Irondequoit. With relatives in Medina, I will provide some help there as well.
Subjects:
Parks and recreation, shopping, public facilities and attractions, and other things that tweak my curiosity. A particular focus on our grandchildren visitors. I am very interested in mapping, Google maps, etc.
Photos:
I will be adding from my existing photos, will keep RocWiki in mind when I have the camera along, and will edit in photo links from Flikr, Webshots, YouTube, etc as I find Rochester related photos and videos.
HelperBee:
Activities:
I am trying my hand at cleanup, new entries, adding photos, and HelperBee tasks. I especially want to work the Routes pages (see Route 250), integrating them better with Wikipedia, which has lots of detail and interconnectedness. Also interesting to add the Google Maps Street View links to some pages (see Mt. Hope Cemetery and Herman's Farm Market).

GOALS NOTE:
The goals above are personal ones, not to be confused with any RocWiki statistics. As my metric, I use my Edits, Creations, and Files; for me they are each a separate contribution to measure my progress. It is not a very good metric, since some of the creations (and some of the edits) took a half-hour or more to complete.
As a professionally educated economist and statistician, I have a lot of concerns about the impacts of metrics. Russian nail factories, for example, switched from wire-brads to railroad spikes when their goal was changed from number of nails to nail tonnage. In the famous Westinghouse experiment (
Hawthorne_effect), workers productivity increased as they turned down the lighting.
In RocWiki, for example, two wonderful contributors might each have different work styles. One contributor might like to do a lot of cleanup edits, making sure some standardization is maintained. Another contributor might like to research and contribute a lot of content and detail. Both contributors are very important to RocWiki - but one will have a much small number of Edits and Creates to count.

2009-01-25 22:33:57 What Lindsay page??? I don't see it...must've vanished mysteriously *whistles innocently* —PeteB
2009-01-30 23:18:21 I didn't delete the history Brad. It's just no longer an active page —PeteB
2009-03-03 15:10:05 Brad—regarding your comment of "See One for previous revisions prior to March 3, 2009."—you can't go to One for previous revisions-it is a redirect to One Restaurant & Lounge —PeteB
2009-03-03 15:38:06 Or we could just not be so concerned over the Redirects :) —PeteB
2009-03-10 12:18:00 Brad, I see you edited my first new entry on RocWiki. I hope that I made a decent first attempt. —WayneArthurton
2009-03-14 23:00:24 I am living in Webster. I wanted to help a little, but really was thinking I would start with the stuff I can go see in person easily. —WayneArthurton
2009-03-23 13:38:05 I'm curious. Is there any reason why interwiki logos don't seem to appear on this rocwiki. For instance when i do "
Ithaca" i get the standard default logo, same for buffalo, its bizarre because I've never seen this before when editing other wikis. —MattHh
2009-03-24 01:43:58 Interesting. Also this wiki is the only one that doesn't recognize my other wiki accounts (i.e. it made me sign up all over again, or else I wasn't able to edit, where as buffalo, davis, ithaca, woodland CA, Sacramento,... all allow me to login under my wikispot account). Wiki spot also does not recognize me as the same person as my other wiki accounts, even though i used the same email address to create the account. —MattHh
2009-03-30 21:49:58 Brad-just curious-did you delete BarCamp Rochester? There were no comments in the Recent Changes section —PeteB
2009-04-02 23:26:42 Brad—I have a real strong concern over The Job Wire page. While the website is registered publically, I'd be careful about posting personal addresses & home phone #'s on RocWiki —PeteB
2009-04-03 07:06:49 In that case I would recommend deleting it and not use it until we can confirm its current —PeteB
2009-04-07 17:28:33 Fixed...thx —PeteB
2009-04-09 23:04:47 Brad—with Starvin' Marvin's you've introduced a *whole new business template*. While I think it's interesting and plausible, this kind of wholesale change should have community input—it's a bit more complicated then the standard template. I'm concerned about keeping the template easy-to-use for the novice user/ Would you mind holding off on more like this until it is discussed at a meeting AND in the google group please? The April Contributor's meeting is 4/26 at 4pm at Jay's Diner —PeteB
2009-04-11 15:49:53 Thanks for the info, it's hard to stop making edits once you start. —DamianKumor
2009-04-14 11:07:38 Hey Brad, I understand your concern with keeping this site clean. Are there any restrictions on what we put on our user pages? I just read most of the information about businesses posting on here and unfortunately I made this username before I saw suggestions on using my own name. Also, would it be considered okay for us to continue linking to our clients' websites in the way you listed them out? I'm interested in continuing to contribute to the community but I'd like to follow as many guidelines as possible so I'm not producing useless content. —AccelerateMedia
2009-04-14 12:29:01 Brad-a very upset local business owner has posted to the Googlegroup about some changes you made. Just letting you know. If there is *ANY* chance you can come to the Contributor's meeting, I'd really like to have a discussion. Thanks —PeteB
2009-04-15 11:53:09 Congrats on the hitting the 500 page count record! —TravisOwens
2009-04-15 14:32:46 I see the Orphaned Page list is pretty tiny, you obviously had your hand in that, great job there. I always though the large number of orphaned pages was a sore eye for any wiki, and there was alot of them on RocWiki for awhile. Nice trick linking my orphaned page via a comment, neat trick. Fortunately IthacaWiki is pretty small so I've been able to keep track on orphaned pages easily, but I'm sure it will explode sometime in the near future.
PS: my personal claim to fame here was that I was the first person to start adding location pictures on a mass scale, back in 2005 there was less than a dozen pics on the wiki and on some slow weekends I'd just drive and take pictures of everything then upload them later. —TravisOwens
2009-04-26 09:34:38 Morning Brad...yes someone does generally take notes and puts em up. We'll see what happens :) —PeteB
2009-04-27 18:11:35 Brad-attendance was low but good stuff discussed. Ryan took notes and will put them up when he can. There will be no May meeting but we're going to make June's meeting a picnic for all to attend. —PeteB
2009-04-28 17:53:05 Brad—one thought. I've received a couple comments over the past few weeks saying people don't like having to look down and see the footnote about when the hours were last updated. Would you be offended if we keep it in the original template style of (As of **** ****)? It'd be less work for users to see when it was last updated —PeteB
