NOTE - 2008 was a difficult year - in the ICU for eppiglotitis in April, cancer diagnosis and three surgeries from July-Sep. Then our daughter, RocWiki editing got me through the cancer surgery recovery and BufWiki gave me an alternative focus after my daughter's death I look forward to a better 2009 and am back to working with RocWiki, Bufwiki, and other tasks more for the joy of it. |

RocWiki Addiction - been there, done that!!
Geographic:
As a Webster (and former Fairport) resident, my main focus will be with Rochester east areas - including Webster, Penfield, Perinton, Fairport, and Irondequoit. With relatives in Medina, I will provide some help there as well.
Subjects:
Parks and recreation, shopping, public facilities and attractions, and other things that tweak my curiosity. A particular focus on our grandchildren visitors. I am very interested in mapping, Google maps, etc.
Photos:
I will be adding from my existing photos, will keep RocWiki in mind when I have the camera along, and will edit in photo links from Flikr, Webshots, YouTube, etc as I find Rochester related photos and videos.
HelperBee:
Activities:
I am trying my hand at cleanup, new entries, adding photos, and HelperBee tasks. I especially want to work the Routes pages (see Route 250), integrating them better with Wikipedia, which has lots of detail and interconnectedness. Also interesting to add the Google Maps Street View links to some pages (see Mt. Hope Cemetery and Herman's Farm Market).

GOALS NOTE: the goals above are personal ones, not to be confused with any RocWiki statistics. As my metric, I use my Edits, Creations, and Files; for me they are each a separate contribution to measure my progress. It is not a very good metric, since some of the creations (and some of the edits) took a half-hour or more to complete.
As a professionally educated economist and statistician, I have a lot of concerns about the impacts of metrics. Russian nail factories, for example, switched from wire-brads to railroad spikes when their goal was changed from number of nails to nail tonnage. In the famous Westinghouse experiment (
Hawthorne_effect), workers productivity increased as they turned down the lighting.
In RocWiki, for example, two wonderful contributors might each have different work styles. One contributor might like to do a lot of cleanup edits, making sure some standardization is maintained. Another contributor might like to research and contribute a lot of content and detail. Both contributors are very important to RocWiki - but one will have a much small number of Edits and Creates to count.

2007-05-16 14:58:49 Welcome to RocWiki, Brad! Please let us know if we can answer any questions or offer assistance —PeteB
2008-07-06 01:42:04 Thanks for all the great additions to the wiki! —DaveMahon
2008-07-07 18:45:41 No worries. :-) Generally speaking, every action can be undone, so in general, feel free to be bold! I hope your recovery is going well, and thanks for your help over the past week!! —RyanTucker
2008-07-08 14:58:43 Brad, you inspired me to make a Community Supported Agriculture page and list some local farms. —KimBee
2008-07-09 16:57:04 Most of the edits I make are from following the Recent Changes page, so I didn't really even notice. If anything, it's neat to watch how a few small contributions from a lot of people on a page creates such a rich online resource. —AlexanderGartley
2008-07-10 15:59:26 Good luck on your recovery, Brad. —PeteB
2008-07-11 06:26:08 I see what you mean, but does anyone really use a browser window that small anymore? Or am I just spoiled by a large monitor? I still believe photos should stay to the right for consistency. —DottieHoffmann
2008-07-12 00:08:48 Brad—Congratulatons, you are the new DamnHippy! Nice work on the Pelican's Nest Restaurant page!!!! I like the way you've just jumped into the Wiki—PeteB
2008-07-13 22:22:20 That works. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't making stuff up when I said that you could have food brought to you at a table in the restaurant. —DaveMahon
2008-07-13 22:23:41 Sorry to hear that you'll need more surgery. As much as we all appreciate your contribution, I wish you a speedy recovery. —DaveMahon
2008-07-13 22:37:19 Thanks Dave for the best wishes on my recovery. I get my stitches out tomorrow and go for a longish PET Scan on Tuesday. After that we will know how much trouble they have to deal with - ergo - when and how much more surgery is in store. TO ALL - wear that hat and the sunscreen !!! —BradMandell
2008-07-16 22:32:55 First off, I once again wish you the best with your pending PET results. Second, I'm sorry to hear about the spam. Contributors are almost always permitted to redact or replace their own comments, so no worries about that. I will leave it up to you to continue or terminate your group membership, but if you remain inactive, spambots will only be able to see your address where it has already been posted as membership on our group does require Group Manager approval. —DaveMahon
2008-07-18 11:13:23 I hadn't paid much attention to the people template in the past, I'll keep that in mind for future people overhauls. I personally don't care for that layout much, but standards are good. —AlexanderGartley
2008-07-18 14:20:50 My only concern about Rochester Environmental Issues is that it's orphaned. Do you have any ideas regarding pages that could link to it? —DaveMahon
2008-07-22 14:15:19 Yeah, I don't know why it said I edited map locations bc I didn't. All I did was remove the Reviews rows from the top tables. weird. —AlexanderGartley
2008-07-22 15:26:52 Alexander tripped the updated geocaching system, where we store the precise coordinates. —DaveMahon
2008-07-23 13:40:49 isn't Burgundy Basin inn more of a party hall than a restaurant? just curious —TippingPoint
2008-07-26 10:40:37 Twitter bought out Summize, so I renamed the macro, but forgot I put it there. Whoops! Thanks. —RyanTucker
2008-07-27 17:37:09 I don't think we have the right to publish the maps, like you did on Lakeshore Country Club. We don't, but I see how you did it and I believe that does constitute fair use to embed the linked image. —DaveMahon
2008-08-02 10:02:08 Um, at some point someone is going to mention this, so it might as well be me... this is awkward... pages created is included in total edits. Files aren't though. So, you're, um, actually at 917.
Sorry. —DaveMahon
2008-08-02 11:01:24 You're doing great stuff on the site - keep it up! You and Alexander have taken on the ungainly, but important, task of cleaning up the appearance and usability of the site. Your photos and new content are a welcome addition too. And you've become an integral member of the community in that one short month. —DaveMahon
2008-08-14 11:14:21 Good luck with the surgery! I hope your recovery is swift. Keep it positive and take it easy. :-) —RyanTucker
2008-08-25 18:09:37 Hooray! —RyanTucker
2008-08-28 19:25:31 Brad - of course you can go ahead and update the mystery picture, you certainly do not need to ask my permission but that was nice of you. Add the current photo to the mystery archive page then set yours up as the new one —DottieHoffmann
2008-09-03 01:48:35 Thank you for the kind words and assistance on the page! After using RocWiki for so long it's great to finally get "involved" with it. I'll be sure to reconsider my "just a" status =P —WillChesebro
2008-09-03 17:59:31 Sorry about the dislike of the "Closed" format Brad...I just really don't like it at all —PeteB
2008-09-04 01:27:27 Hmm, it's not the divinity school, since that's next to Highland park. Either way, it's privately owned land that abides by its own regulations and would not want to be held accountable for any mishaps. Is it the Hillside Children's Center? —WillChesebro
2008-09-10 15:10:07 hmm, good question. Given the nature of RocWiki, and the fact that we are not a commercial entity, we can make a really good case that using those photos on our site is a fair use. We can strongly argue that this is an educational use of the photos, we aren't selling them, the Library archive is not losing any money or sales by us using the photos. Also, using a portion (or, in the case of a photograph, the whole) of a copyrighted work for commentary purposes is also considered a fair use.
Also, any photo taken before 1923 is copyright-free and in the public domain. So if you ever come across an image from before 1923, there's no concern of copyright.
I'm sure this has been discussed before, and perhaps there are other RocWikians with more knowledge than myself, but I would argue that we can make a really strong case that our use of those photos is fair use, and that case would hold up in court. If the consensus is to not use those images, I'll delete them and take them down. But that would be a shame, and for all I know about copyright, I think we are fine to use the images. Another option would be to contact the person in charge of the library's photo archive, but it's possible that even they don't know the ins and outs of copyright law and web usage of the photos. Perhaps as a gesture of goodwill, we could add a link to the photo archive in the caption of each of the images. —AlexanderGartley
2008-09-13 18:57:43 Brad-it was just Dave and myself. We ate, drank & chilled. —PeteB
2008-09-16 15:54:00 Brad—please remember to use capital letters in titles...ie community college —PeteB
2008-09-16 17:11:40 Sorry I checked them all before changing them and didn't see the purpose noted when you created them in lower case. —PeteB
2008-09-17 18:56:48 Brad, thank you for your help with my page for Shining Valley. I'm new to this and you made things look much better. I know it may be inviting some spam, but do need to leave the email address link though.
Thanks, Karen

2008-09-17 19:07:19 I didn't know there were standard colors. Can you explain? Thanks! —KarenFeinen
2008-09-17 19:22:07 Thanks again Brad, "A Druid Fellowship" is part of the name, not the translation of Ár nDraíocht Féin. The translation is "Our Own Druidism". The rest is great though. —KarenFeinen
2008-09-17 21:35:00 No problem Brad, an easy mistake to make. I really do love what you've done with the page. I mean it. Thanks again. I'm learning a lot already! —KarenFeinen
2008-09-20 17:33:30 Sorry didn't realize you were still working on ghost walks —PeteB
2008-09-21 15:39:44 Brad—I don't even remember the Dennisobrien post...was well over a year ago. I'm not going to adopt it because I don't know where to put it. —PeteB
2008-09-21 22:03:34 Thanks, I was waiting on a new image from headquarters. Appreciate the edits, been a while since I've created a wholly new page. —MichaelWilloughby
2008-09-22 20:52:38 check out my last post on integrating outside portals on Google Groups. I think it will explain what I'm trying to do. If i'm creating overwhelming sites that aren't very thorough, i apologize. I'm trying to create categorical directories and started thinking InfoRochester.com would be a great template for some new articles, then just migrate some of the content over to RocWiki. I'm also planning on researching each category I've created to add relevant Rochester resources. I didn't think I added a ton of links that weren't relevant to Rochester. My apologies if i did. —ChrisBank
2008-09-30 11:38:10 Brad, you are truly a RocWiki addict, too bad you weren't around in my fanatical editing hay-days here. —TravisOwens
2008-10-01 20:27:47 Hi Brad, I realized that Ralph, my boss and owner of the Rochester Candlelight Ghost Walks posted a page but I don't feel the need to delete the events ads that I post as part of our marketing to make sure that people know when they'll be happening - we're only running them until just before Halloween, so it's not a regular, year-round thing and we feel in order to make the business run we deserve to market what we can. So, in short, I'm going to continue to post to events because the postings are just one part of the programs that Ralph runs. —StephanieTodd
2008-10-02 09:57:17 If a business closes, for instance Fast Chinese Restaurant, I think it would be better to leave the wiki links in the description. For example, someone is looking for a Chinese restaurant, ends up on that page, sees that it is closed, and with a wiki link in the description to the Chinese Food page, they can find other alternatives.
Was there a reason you removed the wiki links to Chinese Food and the Restaurants page? I think those are helpful, even after a business has closed.
That's just my thought though. There may be better reasons for removing the wiki links. Thoughts? —AlexanderGartley
2008-10-02 10:10:42 Oh, and thanks for all your work on the wiki! —AlexanderGartley
2008-10-02 12:55:00 Sounds good Brad, I can never remember all the little tricks to make links when I'm typing in the ad - so this week I'll get wise, figure it out and add it to the ad text that I post for next week. Simple solution to a simple problem, I know. Thanks for the heads up about the page, though. —StephanieTodd
2008-10-02 21:00:14 Then each of the transport pages should be entirely separate—limo included. —PeteB
2008-10-03 10:56:16 Feel free to put them back then. —PeteB
2008-10-07 14:21:43 Thank you. I hope you're feeling well. I certainly take traveling as a good sign. —DaveMahon
2008-10-08 10:39:55 It seems to me that the Irondequoit Bay Outlet and the Irondequoit Bay Outlet Bridge are two different things. On the Irondequoit Bay Outlet page, it refers to the Irondequoit Bay Outlet Bridge, and provides a Wikipedia link to a page about the bridge. I would rather have a page on our wiki about the bridge than link to Wikipedia. That way, we can provide more local content than Wikipedia would. —AlexanderGartley
2008-10-08 10:41:03 I see you combined the two pages. I suppose that will work too, though I still feel the bridge deserves its own page. But that's fine. :) —AlexanderGartley
2008-10-08 13:36:02 Sounds good. I've got two words for you: you rock. —AlexanderGartley
2008-10-09 19:59:23 You know, I did a search for "Monroe" and didn't turn up the "Monroe Theatre" page... darn it. I'll move my photos over to the primary page and delete the new one I made —DottieHoffmann
2008-10-09 20:28:15 Thanks, my friend, all's good! —BadFish
2008-10-28 15:51:12 Should I delete all the images I added from Flickr? I didn't realize the differing licenses could cause a problem. —AlexanderGartley
2008-10-30 16:47:25 Thanks, Brad for all your updating, creating! I truly appreciate it! All my best! —DawnNicoleJohnson
2008-10-30 17:09:18 Hey, Brad. Are you still online? I realized after the fact that I didn't edit my "copy and paste" on the Seabreeze Spririt Night event. I can't figure out how to get in and edit it...or find someone to help me. I saw you were just updating. The event is for this Friday. —DawnNicoleJohnson
2008-10-30 22:52:40 Thanks, Brad - Google must have changed their link pattern for Groups since the last time I ran a link-checker over my page. All fixed now. —MarkJackson
2008-10-31 14:12:38 Hi Brad! Just wanted to let you know I figured out what to do: delete and start over! Doesn't seem to be any other way to edit it. Have a good day! —DawnNicoleJohnson
2008-10-31 15:19:16 No worries...I blew out my lower back overnight & am basically fighting to sit without pain for an 8 hr work shift —PeteB
2008-11-15 13:17:32 Looks like you just did. :-) Sweet. The automatic search add-in thing has been around awhile, although I just did the suggestions thing today. It works pretty well, 'tho it did take a couple tweaks to get it "right". I added a screenshot to the page as well. —RyanTucker
2008-11-15 17:04:38 Looks like it can either produce a table or a bulleted list. Hmm. I've been looking to re-do the Twitter macro for awhile (I did just add caching), so perhaps I can make it more customizable on the next run through. —RyanTucker
2008-11-16 03:44:35 Normally I'd agree, but there wasn't much of an edit history, as it was only MFalvo's single editing session to create the page initially. I think leaving a credit as you did in the rename is appropriate. —NathanHenderson
2008-11-18 23:31:35 Brad—the doody page's image is too small...can we upsize it just a touch to make it legible? —PeteB
2008-11-18 23:40:26 I am deleting pages because MY email updating the situation (today) stated that it has been resolved and we are now in full cleanup mode. Dave is aware and fine with it —PeteB
2008-11-19 10:35:54 I poked around based on your comment re University of Rochester/Tunnel System. If you go to Info > Files and then click on the image's filename, you can read the
