Nov 12th 2009

On Nov 11th, 2009 I received news that my melanoma cancer had metastisized into my spine and ribs. I am now at Stage IV, where the median survival time is 9 months and the 5-year rate is 3%. I will be mostly away from Rochester Wiki while I am getting my affairs in order and working on other priorities.

I will keep some info on my RocWiki /MedicalStatus page for those interested in details.

A lot of the stuff below and elsewhere will have to wait until I need some recreational wiki time (:>)

I hope others will join in, review my previous work and implement some of the strategies I have tried to use for RocWiki improvement (;>} !!!

2008 was both a difficult year with medical and family tragedies, but a highly productive year for wiki activities. RocWiki editing got me through the cancer surgery recovery and [bufwiki]BufWiki gave me an alternative focus after my daughter's death. I am especially proud of the work I put into 2009 and for my work on BufWiki as well.

RocWiki is on my Bucket List and I hope to close out, document, bring some new things in from BufWiki and urge action on some suggestions. The rest I leave to all of you with fond memories and my best wishes.

2008-07-06 01:42:04   Thanks for all the great additions to the wiki! —DaveMahon

2009-03-10 12:18:00   Brad, I see you edited my first new entry on RocWiki. I hope that I made a decent first attempt. —WayneArthurton

2009-03-14 23:00:24   I am living in Webster. I wanted to help a little, but really was thinking I would start with the stuff I can go see in person easily. —WayneArthurton

2009-03-23 13:38:05   I'm curious. Is there any reason why interwiki logos don't seem to appear on this rocwiki. For instance when i do "[ithaca]Ithaca" i get the standard default logo, same for buffalo, its bizarre because I've never seen this before when editing other wikis. —MattHh

2009-03-24 01:43:58   Interesting. Also this wiki is the only one that doesn't recognize my other wiki accounts (i.e. it made me sign up all over again, or else I wasn't able to edit, where as buffalo, davis, ithaca, woodland CA, Sacramento,... all allow me to login under my wikispot account). Wiki spot also does not recognize me as the same person as my other wiki accounts, even though i used the same email address to create the account. —MattHh

2009-04-11 15:49:53   Thanks for the info, it's hard to stop making edits once you start. —DamianKumor

2009-04-14 11:07:38   Hey Brad, I understand your concern with keeping this site clean. Are there any restrictions on what we put on our user pages? I just read most of the information about businesses posting on here and unfortunately I made this username before I saw suggestions on using my own name. Also, would it be considered okay for us to continue linking to our clients' websites in the way you listed them out? I'm interested in continuing to contribute to the community but I'd like to follow as many guidelines as possible so I'm not producing useless content. —AccelerateMedia

2009-04-15 11:53:09   Congrats on the hitting the 500 page count record! —TravisOwens

2009-04-15 14:32:46   I see the Orphaned Page list is pretty tiny, you obviously had your hand in that, great job there. I always though the large number of orphaned pages was a sore eye for any wiki, and there was alot of them on RocWiki for awhile. Nice trick linking my orphaned page via a comment, neat trick. Fortunately IthacaWiki is pretty small so I've been able to keep track on orphaned pages easily, but I'm sure it will explode sometime in the near future.

PS: my personal claim to fame here was that I was the first person to start adding location pictures on a mass scale, back in 2005 there was less than a dozen pics on the wiki and on some slow weekends I'd just drive and take pictures of everything then upload them later. —TravisOwens

2009-07-09 18:00:34   Hey Brad. I'm heavily involved with West Coast Swing community here and am so excited to find something like RocWiki to post findings. I saw you moved the West Coast Swing pages around for better organization — good point that the "List" page isn't a list — fixed that. Really liked the "dance styles" tag at the bottom of a venue. Having never managed a wiki before (but spent a lot of time on Wikipedia, if that counts?), is it proper wiki etiquette to use a "LinksHere" tag and place any related comments on the host page? —jesse.decker

2009-07-18 23:18:13   Thanks for your help again on the West Coast Swing page. We hope to make the venue list long enough to warrant it's own page, but I hadn't considered inclusion. Just opened up [WWW]RocWCS for calendars and venue reviews, so maybe it'll be better to only post one-sentence blurbs back to RocWiki... —jesse.decker

2009-07-24 22:26:50   Brad - John something or other deleted my page because he didn't like what I said about a golf course. Without me messing around - would you bring it back? —BigPun

2009-07-31 11:47:11   No worries :) —AlexanderGartley

2009-08-10 17:54:56   Brad - no worries on photo positioning, have at it all you want —DottieHoffmann

2009-09-12 23:34:43   Thanks for the cleanup work you did to my recent addition of New Day Church, I was going back to it today to do some of the things you did, you did it much better than I would have, as I do not do Wiki editing but a few times a year. Now I have to figure the best way to add the festival to the festivals page - maybe you can do it or check if I did it properly. I will learn from the way you fixed the layout for the next place I add. —JackGreenky

2009-09-22 22:09:09   Brad, we just met at the Gilda Club. I would like to send you my paper that needs to be converted to PDF. It also needs to cleaned up and reviewed. My Email is <dbreitfe AT rochester DOT rr DOT com>. If you want to make a difference in helping people with Melanoma, I could use your help. Jimmy b —jimBreitfeller

2009-10-09 18:41:43   Hey Brad, the photos from RochesterDowntown.com for [grove_place] are at [WWW]http://www.rochesterdowntown.com/living/fetchBuilding_r.php?138 — Some of the pics might be taken down. Also, I'm not sure about copyright issues, so if you can figure out how to properly attribute them to RochesterDowntown.com be my guest, otherwise I would be okay if you took the pics off RocWiki. There is a person that you can contact for permission, Sean Phelan; use his first initial and last name @ rddc.org —BenMargolis

2009-11-12 14:41:41   Yeah, City Newspaper came out with their 2009 "Best of Rochester" awards, so I went on an updating spree.

More importantly, I wanted to say thanks for all your contributions to the wiki. I'm really sorry to hear the news of your cancer returning. I'll pray for you that God will comfort and bring peace to you and your family. Although only God knows what the outcome of your situation will be, if you look to Him, He will be there for you. :) —AlexanderGartley
