Gone, But Not Forgotten

The Wegmans LPGA Championship was an annual woman's professional golf tournament held at the Locust Hill Country Club in Pittsford. The tournament began in 1977, and had always been one of the player's most popular stops on the LPGA tour schedule. Several LPGA greats had graced its champions list, including [WWW]Nancy Lopez, [WWW]Karrie Webb, [WWW]Dottie Pepper, [WWW]Rosie Jones, and [WWW]Patty Sheehan.

Tournament proceeds were given to charities such as the United Way. Free parking was usually at Monroe Community College with buses shuttling to the golf course itself. Many homes near the course offer parking on their front lawns - the closer to the course the more expensive the fees.

With the LPGA struggling a bit in 2009, Wegmans stepped forward and announced an increased level of tournament sponsorship that turned this "regular" tour event into the "major" LPGA Championship. Under this arrangement the tournament had been one of the top events in worldwide ladies golf since 2010.

Since 2014, there has been no LPGA tournament in Rochester.
