Wineries are abundant in the greater area around Rochester and we take particular pride in our Finger Lakes Wine Country. There are several hundred vineyards and wineries within a number of [wikipedia]American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) across Western New York and Canada that are reasonably accessible from the Rochester region. In addition to the [wikipedia]Finger Lakes AVA and its subsets, we also have access to wineries in the [wikipedia]Lake Erie AVA along Lake Erie SouthWest of Buffalo, and some great Ice Wine country in Ontario, Canada North and West of Niagara Falls along Lake Ontario. The [wikipedia]Niagara Escarpment AVA was added in 2005 and recognized New York grapes grown NorthWest of Rochester.

Wineries are normally categorized by their AVA, the lake upon which they depend, or a designation and/or membership in one of the regions official Wine Trails. All wineries provide tastings of their products (some for a fee) and sell their wines on-site. Some will provide tours of their winery and vineyards. Some have cafes, bistros or restaurants on-site.
