It was the last "creative input" needed for the Articles of Incorporation and therefore choosing a name was seen as immediately imperative. There had been two schools of thought on naming our co-op. The first was to choose a descriptive name such as "Rochester Housing Cooperative"; indeed, lacking anything more creative, we had used the name "Rochester Student Housing Cooperative" when joining NASCO the preceding November. The second school of thought, with a nearly universal following, was that this was too generic, and that we ought to choose something more interesting. Everyone had his or her pet name for the co-op then, and we had trouble finding something mutually agreeable until Rudy suggested, "Well, I liked 'Ant Hill.'" Nobody had suggested Ant Hill--it was a misremembering of "[http://arts.ucsc.edu/faculty/Lord/AntFarm.html Ant Farm]," a reference to a group of radical architects who went by that name and whose collected works had recently been exhibited--but it turned out to be mutually agreeable.
