2008-07-21 16:44:52   Regarding EastSideStephen's version rollback: I don't see any problem with a business owner adding themselves to the Deals page. Perhaps we should suggest limiting entries to those that offer a tangible discount (coupons, etc.) —NathanHenderson

2008-07-21 16:53:56   I also don't see a problem with a business owner adding a deal. They are a wiki user just like everyone else. The only issue is that other wiki users should keep an eye on it for "neutral point of view". —BadFish

2008-07-21 19:14:45   I think it's impossible for this page to have NPOV. It's strictly subjective as to what constitutes a "deal". With that in mind, to prevent this page from becoming an advertisement, I believe we should impose the rule that business owners cannot add their own businesses.

We needn't look any further than the entry I erased for an example. The "deal" that I erased really wasn't much of a deal. It wasn't any cheaper than the lunch specials offered at a lot of restaurants. The owner may have reasoned that it was a deal because her food is so delicious (and it might be) - but this kind of subjectivity is too easy to abuse.

Frankly, we may wish to impose further guidelines on this page, as it has lots of opportunities for abuse. Granted, said abuse wouldn't be terrible, but enough of it would obfuscate any useful information.

If wiki users see value in providing a place for owners to post their own deals, then I think it should be distinct from the page on which people post deals that they have found (this one, in its current state). —EastSideStephen

2008-07-21 20:24:07   While I agree that there is nothing inherently wrong in adding yourself to the page, the only portion that was appropriate was the Google coupon. Sales, pricing and turnaround time are out of context.

I do have a bigger issue with the page in that it's unclear when a deal was added or if and when the deal in question expires.

If we limit the page to explicitly time constrained discounts published elsewhere that are available to the general community (thus excluding RARES, employer and student discounts) and require that start and end dates be included, we also avoid the problem, while still improving the likelihood that a coupon announcement will actually appear on the page. With an end date in place, it's relatively easy for our gophers to keep the page clean. —DaveMahon

2008-09-29 12:31:11   The discussion reveals another strong need for a more useful form of "tagging". I tried several ways to see if the current Search facility could serve as a mechanism for finding deals, for example, putting a [WWW]Search Restaurant Coupons on the page. However, the results are limited and produce non-useful results mixed in with real ones. If there were some Tags macro on individual pages and a TagSearch macro that would return something like Orphaned Pages or, even better, Wanted Pages with a Tag Cloud. Editors are spending a good bit of time putting pages on category lists (and multiple lists with Restaurants), then they all need to be fixed or undone if the place closes, etc. —BradMandell
