Derek Roy, currently a Center for the Buffalo Sabres, previously played for the Rochester Americans (Amerks).
After emerging in the OHL for the Kitchinger Rangers, the 5 foot 9, 188 pound Center was drafted 32nd overall by the Sabres in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He played three more seasons with the Rangers before being called up by the Sabres and sent immediately to the Amerks.
Roy played the start of the 2003-2004 season with the Amerks before being called up by the Sabres. In 49 games with the Sabres in the 2003-2004 season he collected 19 points on 9 goals and 10 assists.
Derek played all 67 games of the 2004-2005 AHL Season with the Amerks racking up 61 points on 16 goals and 45 assists. The next year he played 8 games with the Amerks before being called up by the Sabres for the remainder of the season. He scored 46 points on 18 goals and 28 assists which helped Buffalo clinch a playoff berth. Buffalo advance to the Eastern Conference Finals before losing to the eventual Stanley Cup Champions, the Carolina Hurricanes.
As the Sabres progress throughout the playoffs, "Roysy", a product of the local Rochester Amerks, is still a very important factor to the Sabres success.
