Eco House has provided a really great living situation for a lot of people and we want to give you some information about us to help you make an informed decision about your housing choice.
- Eco House is located at 1201 Genesee Street, Eco Estate is located at 12 Arvine Heights (right across the street). Currently Eco House has 7 members, and the Estate has 5 members. The houses are located in a safe area and are close enough to campus that walking or biking is easy. Both houses provide a cooperate living environment with a focus on eco-friendly living. Choosing Eco House is more than choosing a place to live, it's also about focusing on how you live. We try to make environmentally friendly choices in our daily lives as much as possible by purchasing local food, buying in bulk to reduce packaging, recycling, composting, and keeping a low temperature in our houses. We're currently working with Ant Hill Cooperative, another housing co-op in Rochester, to share ideas about our lifestyles choices and try to improve, sustain, and possibly integrate cooperative housing groups in Rochester.
- Members of Eco House are part of a community. We don't just share a house, but we enjoy a shared space. People take turns cooking and cleaning to provide a positive living situation for everybody. There are responsibilities that come along with living here, but there are also a lot of benefits. As people sharing a living space, there are certain obligations expected of members. Following are some of the responsibilities of an Eco House member:
-
- Shared dinners: People take turns cooking, nobody needs to cook more than once every week or 2. However, coming to dinner as much as you can is encouraged. The meal schedule can be modified based on the requirements of current members. Can't cook? No problem! You can partner up with somebody who loves to cook and help them out, it's the best way to learn. Also, nobody expects gourmet meals, make pancakes for dinner if that's what you like! Great benefit- you get a home cooked meal every night, there's no need to skip dinner or eat from a box if you're short on time.
- Shopping: There are weekly shopping trips to Wegmans, the public market, and Abundance (a shopping co-op). We try to find the best deals on local and bulk foods (when possible), and it's great to eat seasonally! We rotate the different shopping trips amongst the members, so you won't have to go shopping more than biweekly. If you have dietary needs or are just a picky eater that's fine, we're willing to accommodate anybody. The cost is split between house members. Want to buy some things for yourself? No problem, label it and it won't be touched. Benefit- lots of things are cheaper when you buy in bulk! There are always baking supplies and staples around, you can use any of the supplies to prepare your own food whenever you want.
- Chores: This stuff is pretty basic- washing and putting away dishes, cleaning bathrooms, sweeping, emptying compost, keeping common areas neat. The chores are all basically aimed at keeping shared spaces clean so that everybody can enjoy them. The chores can be divided in whatever way works best for house members- an organized chore chart where people take turns at different jobs can be useful if people prefer structure, a cleaning day can be arranged, or people can be expected to clean up after themselves- it all depends on what works for you.
- Co-op meetings: Again, how these work is up to current house members. Meetings can be regular (weekly or monthly), or planned as needed. Meetings can be a venue for people to bring up issues they have with the house, suggest improvements, or meet with other groups to swap ideas. In addition, house meetings are a great time to plan house potlucks and parties!
- Co-op costs: House members are expected to pay monthly bills on time. You will be given notice when payment is due. Monthly rent differs slightly between the houses.
- Eco House: rent is 286.67 with 6 people, 245 with 7 people.
- Eco Estate: rent is 310 with 4 people, 280 with 5 people.
- Monthly payments range from around 300-450, higher in winter due to higher utilities costs. This include rent, utilities (including wireless internet), all food costs, and a small co-op fee. This is considerably less than you will be paying to live on campus.
-
- Other eco-friendly aspects:
- Composting- organic matter is collected and kept outside until it's ready to be used as fertilizer.
- Recycling- we separate plastic, glass, and paper from regular trash.
- Minimizing electricity usage- this includes drip drying; we hang clothes to dry rather than using the dryer for every load of wash. Also the use of compact florescent lightbulbs provides us with adequate lighting while reducing energy consumption by about 20% (compared with using incandescent bulbs).
- Climate control- we keep the heat in the houses relatively low in winter to save energy. Plastic covering and fleece curtains really help to insulate windows. The temperature isn't set, members can decide what is appropriate for them.
- Transportation- house members try to keep driving to a minimum. Walking and biking to campus is quick and easy, and the bus system will get around a lot of Rochester. If driving is necessary it's a good idea to carpool and combine trips.
-
- Eco House is a product of its residents, we decide how we want to live. Everything (almost) is negotiable. If you're interested in Eco Housing we're willing to work to accommodate you. We maintain a mostly vegetarian kitchen- all shared meals are appropriate for vegetarians. However this does NOT mean that you cannot eat meat if you live here. Not everybody here is vegetarian, you're allowed to prepare whatever you want for yourself, we just require that you're respectful of other people's needs.
- One important consideration is that Eco House requires more commitment than a rental agreement. Members are expected to be active participants- this takes time! Do you have time to spend each week doing chores and helping in the kitchen? This definitely won't take up all your time, but it's something to think about. Interested in Eco House but already have a friend you want to live with? Feel free to forward this email to anybody else who might be interested in us. We have a lot of openings and it's likely that we have room for you and a friend.
-
- If you have any questions or concerns please contact me or another member of Eco House as soon as possible. We want to help you make a housing decision that's good for you. If you're interested in meeting with a current house member just let us know, we're willing to arrange a meeting on campus at your convenience. If you haven't had a chance to stop by the houses feel free to come over for dinner and a tour. Please call ahead/email to arrange a time that's good for you.
-
- Eco House (1201 Genesee St) is hosting a wine party on Friday March 9th starting at 8:00.
