Bear Meadow, Fine Appalachian Dulcimers
Dwain Wilder is internationally recognized as one of the two or three leading builders of the traditional Appalachian dulcimer (or "mountain dulcimer). At his studio in Ellison Park he custom builds a variety of models for clients nationally, as well as in Europe, Asia and Australia. His waiting list varies from one to three years. His dulcimers are known for their unique beauty, action, responsiveness and dynamic range.
Bear Meadow dulcimers are entirely hand made, using the finest quartersawn, air dried, select local black walnut, Sitka spruce and redwood. He has been an innovator in design and construction techniques, and even holds the only U.S. patent specific for the dulcimer, FlexiFrets, a removable fret system.
The Bear Meadow website is a very large (over 200 pages) trove of illustrations of Dwain's techniques, materials, artistic, design and building philosophy. The website is often used by other builders of the instrument as a reference. Included are calculators, dimensions, and specialized tools which can be ordered by other builders.
Dwain Wilder also conducts classes and apprenticeships in his studio, and also at Blue Mountain Lake, in the Adirondacks.
