Lyell-Otis is a diverse working-class neighborhood that is primarily industrial in character, particularly around Mt. Read Boulevard and Emerson Street. Its residential areas offer sturdy old housing stock with wood trim, front porches, stained glass, and other features of historical character. The neighborhood association is currently working on developing their section of the Erie Canal into a business district similar to Schoen Place. Lyell-Otis's eastern border in fact follows the Erie Canal's original path.

JR Wilson Park, J.P. Riley Park, Paul Bianchi Park, and Sebastian Park are located here.

Lyell-Otis's dining options reflect its history of immigration. Here you will find both Italian restaurants that have stood for generations and some recent arrivals offering cuisine from Southeast Asia, especially Vietnamese.

Lyell Avenue itself forms a busy southern border with the Westside Neighbors (formerly U.N.I.T.) and Dutchtown neighborhoods.
