History

Originally the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics' Association and the Mechanics Institute, these two educational institutions later merged to form what is now known as the Rochester Institute of Technology. In 1959 RIT— at that point located in downtown Rochester, was made aware by the New York State Department of Public works that the Inner Loop highway project would cut through institute's campus. In 1961 RIT made the decision to move the college out of the city to the nearby suburb of Henrietta.1 The Henrietta campus opened to students in 1968.

The current school campus is now located on 1,300 acres, which includes dense woodland and freshwater swamp wetlands. RIT's northern border is Jefferson Road, which is home to many strip malls, the Marketplace Mall, and several restaurants within a 5 minute drive. Also surrounding RIT are business incubators, such as [WWW]the Lennox Tech Enterprise Center. RIT is approximately 6 miles south of Rochester, a 15 minute drive from downtown.
