SUNY Brockport was founded in 1841 as a private college and joined the SUNY system in 1948. Over 60 buildings are located on the 435-acre campus. The college currently offers 42 undergraduate and 27 graduate programs of study. There is also a campus in Downtown Rochester called Rochester Educational Opportunity Center of SUNY that moved in May 2012 to their new location off Chestnut Street.

In the 2008 US News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges" guide, SUNY Brockport ranked 80th in the Northern region master's universities category1.
