Sniderman Hardware is a long-standing independent hardware store in the Upper Falls neighborhood. The big-box stores such as Lowe's and Home Depot often refer customers here due to Sniderman's large stock of hard-to-find parts for old heating and plumbing systems. Sniderman's is also one of a few places that will rent to people who don't have credit cards.
The current owner is Jeff Sniderman, grandson of founder Sam Sniderman.
History
Sam Sniderman originally owned a toy store across the street. Recognizing an opportunity, he purchased the Ma's Old Fashioned Root Beer bottling plant and set up his hardware shop. Unlike other white Jewish-owned businesses in the Joseph Avenue area, Sniderman's escaped destruction during the 1964 Race Riot due to Sam's reputation as a friend of poor black people.
Today, Sniderman's is a true neighborhood institution that prides itself in personal relationships with its regulars and willingness to help low-income customers.
