Due east of Rochester by about an hour, Syracuse is a small city in Central New York that strings along the old Erie Canal route. It has many of the same benefits, as well as problems, of the other canal and manufacturing cities of Buffalo, Rochester, Utica, and Albany. Smaller than Rochester, Syracuse was hit harder by the loss of manufacturing jobs but continues to soldier on as a university town despite the economic downturn.
