We love the fish and chips (w/ mushy peas of course)! I would eat that dish every dayyy. I also like the king's cross sandwich and the OT Burger. Definitely go when the Mr. Mustard (Beatles cover band) is playing. It just adds to the already awesome atmosphere. Tried the scotch egg and it was....well....a scotch egg. Nothing special, not bad but not great. Had the fish and chips. This time the chips sucked, undercooked and flimsy, but the fish was awesome. The wife had shepard's pie and I was not impressed, kind of bland. Hopefully they'll find some way to maintain consistency, the chips the first time I went were spectacular. Some of the dishes have been modified slightly for improved flavor, as would be the prerogative of the cooks in any good pub, but not beyond what would be reasonable for good pub food. I suppose all of you have vast experience in the hospitality industry and could do a much better job. Lets brake this down, The Old Toad is a British style pub in The United States that has recently celebrated its 21st year in business. University Students on work experience placements come over and LEARN how to manage, run and work in the United States Hospitality Industry, they do this for a year. Each and every year a whole new crew come over and it starts all over again.
-
- Now unfortunately with such a vast turn over in staff each year it takes time for the staff to cliamatise and adjust to the hights of customer service expected out here in this country. Can you please understand that before going on a rant about how terrible the place is? These kids are 20-21 years old and don't need people on here who want to hide behind a computer screen knocking there confidence any further.
-
- A couple simple ways to deal with anything you don't like at The Old Toad -
-
- 1. Simply make your server or bartender aware of any problems when they occur. Beliveve it or not they are human too and will be more than happy to do everything they can to make you happy
-
- 2. BE PATIENT - If its a busy Friday night have some courtesy and realize that whoever is or wants to take care of you probably isn't sat with there feet up watching an invisible TV in the back room. Its a small place, with limited staff and a very small kitchen. Work it out? If your server is running around like the house is on fire and pretty sure thats code for its BUSY. Order at the bar like any normal person if thats the case and the bartender will happily deliver your order! Simple?
-
- I'm pretty certain The Old Toad wants to serve you any make you all happy. As a regular customer I have never had a problem big enough to lose my mind over it. I know for a fact if any problem ever arose it could be taken care of there and then, in a polite mature manner. You are not royalty my fellow patrons, get your head out of your asses and realize that. We were given communication skills to use them. If you can type your reasoning's you can also voice them.
-
- If not go complain somewhere else, im sure your capable of it. We had a huge party and I literally sat around for twenty minutes waiting for a server to come over before getting tired and thirsty and just going up to the bar. I had to flag down one of the bartenders, asked him for a beer and some chips with gravy. He takes my credit card, gives me my beer, and then doesn't say another word to me. He didn't ask if I wanted to start a tab, so I assumed he just forgot to give it back and I had to flag down another bartender to give my card back. Fourty minutes later, my friend who sat down at the bar and ordered twenty minutes after I did gets her chips and gravy, so I flag down the bartender again to ask him where my food was. He looks at my friend and tells her that she is eating my chips and gravy and then suggests that we share them. Half an hour later my friend finally gets her chips and gravy. At 6pm, you can easily get a drink from the bar. And, an oddity, we actually saw a server roaming the dining area, something I haven't seen in the last several of my trips to the Old Toad at night. If you're looking for a good 10pm spot, stay away from here. It'll take you several minutes to get the attention of the bartender, then you'll squeeze through a crowded sitting area with no hope of finding a table. Also, the beer prices are starting to approach my 'too expensive to have more than one beer' limit, at a minimum of $4.50 and up to about 7 bucks. The Old Toad DOES have a couple taps of Real Ale, and the local brew I had from the cask was excellent. I'd recommend this place for an early evening drink, but you might want to find someplace else to meet a large group of friends for a night out. --["Users/MRich"]
- ------
- 2008-10-16 09:38:22 nbsp The cask beer/real ale rocks. The food is less consistent depending on what's ordered, but when it hits, it hits. I didn't care much for the fish and chips, but I love the Piccadilly (Basically a tuna melt with bacon.) The business is there for these students to learn about small business management. I feel that the bitching on this website is because people are not aware of this. As for the English cuisine, again, this is being cooked by students, not professional chefs. If you have to wait a long time for service, this is because service in the states differs from the UK. People do not just sit down at a table and expect to be served in the UK and many of the servers, especially the new ones take a while to get used to this. They keep a constant rotation of excellent draught beers. The fine people in charge of picking the brews obviously know what they are doing. The food is tasty, but it can vary from year to year as the kitchen staff turns over (they are British students on year-long internships). My favorites are the Beef and Ale Pie and the Trafalger Square sandwich. Their chips (fries to us yanks) are top-notch. The best thing about this bar is the atmosphere. There are no TVs, and the music is low so you can have actual conversations. There are tables, upholstered benches, and a cozy room with a fireplace. The greens on both the burger and in the salad were rotted. Slimy. And considering slime is one step away from mold, it went beyond the aesthetic issue of "less than fresh" greens and into the territory of "make you sick" greens. Neither is acceptable in a restaurant, but rotted is just gross. Rotted lettuce is a telltale sign that something is going terribly wrong in the kitchen. The fries were also not cooked all the way through, which is a bit mind boggling. I'm not some super particular person about fries... it's fried food, after all. But a fry that's cold and hard in the middle clearly didn't spend enough time in the fryer, and it ain't gonna taste good.
+
+ I brought the rotted lettuce up to the kitchen, because I think it's important for them to know that there are real people eating their food. The business is there for these students to learn about small business management. Fri - Mon TOT is very busy, especially on trivia nights. There are only ever four people serving and on occasion these servers can have up to 15 tabs each.
+
+ For all of you who would rather go to the Tap and Mallet or Montys Korner, do it, because the guys who work there deserve a break from people like you. --["Users/Lucy"]

https://rocwiki.org/The_Old_Toadhttps://rocwiki.org/The_Old_Toad?action=diff&version1=84&version2=85&ts=1227129927The Old Toad2008-11-19T21:25:27Zalexandergartleyadded creative commons image of some of the food
Differences for The Old Toad

 Deletions are marked with - .

 Additions are marked with +.

Line 1:

Line 1:

- [[Image(Old_Toad.jpg, 254 "The Bar at the Old Toad - photo by ["TomMaszerowski"]", right,thumb,300)]]

+ [[Image(Old_Toad.jpg,"The Bar at the Old Toad - photo by ["TomMaszerowski"]", right,thumb,300)]]
+ [[Image(Chips and Vinegar.jpg,right,thumb,300,"Chips and vinegar. --["Users/MRich"]

https://rocwiki.org/The_Old_Toadhttps://rocwiki.org/The_Old_Toad?action=diff&version1=75&version2=76&ts=1220456696The Old Toad2008-09-03T15:44:56ZBethSumnerComment added.
Differences for The Old Toad

 Deletions are marked with - .

 Additions are marked with +.

Line 108:

Line 108:

+ ------
+ 2008-09-03 11:44:56 nbsp This used to be one of my favorite places in the city.
+ Getting someones attention for an order or for help is close to impossible.
+ A place I used to frequent at least once a week has turned into a place I would only stop by for a quick drink - at the bar. --["Users/BethSumner"]

https://rocwiki.org/The_Old_Toadhttps://rocwiki.org/The_Old_Toad?action=diff&version1=74&version2=75&ts=1220456449The Old Toad2008-09-03T15:40:49ZBethSumner
Differences for The Old Toad

 Deletions are marked with - .

 Additions are marked with +.

Line 1:

Line 1:

- deleted

+ [[Image(Old_Toad.jpg, 254 "The Bar at the Old Toad - photo by ["TomMaszerowski"]", right,thumb,300)]]
+ ||<bgcolor='#E0E0FF'>Location||
+ ||Address("277 Alexander Street, Rochester NY, 14607") ||
+ ||<bgcolor='#E0E0FF'>Phone||
+ ||585 232 2626||
+ ||<bgcolor='#E0E0FF'>Hours||
+ ||Monday-Friday: 11:30am-2:00am||
+ ||Saturday: Noon-2:00am||
+ ||Sunday: 5:00pm-2:00am||
+ ||<bgcolor='#E0E0FF'>Website||
+ ||||
+ ||<bgcolor='#E0E0FF'>Email||
+ ||MailTo(info AT theoldtoad DOT com)||
+ ||<bgcolor='#E0E0FF'>Reviews||
+ ||RochesterDrinks||
+ ||Eat Out Rochester 3/12/07||
+ ||City Newspaper 3/13/07||
+
+ The Old Toad is Rochester's British Pub. If you want to go someplace where the bartender knows cask ale from keg ale, this is the place to go.

https://rocwiki.org/The_Old_Toadhttps://rocwiki.org/The_Old_Toad?action=diff&version1=68&version2=69&ts=1216396230The Old Toad2008-07-18T15:50:30Zalexandergartleymoved photo to top right of page
Differences for The Old Toad

 Deletions are marked with - .

 Additions are marked with +.

Line 1:

Line 1:

+ [[Image(Old_Toad.jpg, 254 "The Bar at the Old Toad - photo by ["TomMaszerowski"]", right,thumb,300)]]

Line 18:

Line 19:

- [[Image(Old_Toad.jpg, 254 "The Bar at the Old Toad - photo by ["TomMaszerowski"]", right, thumbnail)]]

https://rocwiki.org/The_Old_Toadhttps://rocwiki.org/The_Old_Toad?action=diff&version1=67&version2=68&ts=1216247287The Old Toad2008-07-16T22:28:07ZCatMagroComment added.
Differences for The Old Toad

 Deletions are marked with - .

 Additions are marked with +.

Line 102:

Line 102:

+ ------
+ 2008-07-16 18:28:07 nbsp I went here with a bunch of friends for a birthday party. So yeah, he obviously forgot to put mine in and then just lied about it. I know the place was packed, but I shouldn't feel like I'm inconveniencing them by having them do their job.
+
+ Oh, and the chips and gravy weren't that good. One of my friends got the garlic bread, and I would recommend that instead. The only good part about this whole experience was the beer.
