The Spring House is an historic landmark on Monroe Avenue in Pittsford that
"took its name from the famed Monroe Mineral Springs ... [and served as a] hostel to accommodate visitors and guests who came by stage or Erie Canal packet boat to take the water of the spa, as was the fashion of the day and they remained to enjoy the restful surroundings.
The front of the building, which we now consider the rear, faced a landing from the old Erie Canal. Packet boats would unload passengers to enjoy the waters and food and libations and then board a boat for their return trip.
... A special feature of the old ballroom in the third story is the spring floor. Many past patrons mistakenly trace the origin of the name "Spring House" to this curiosity. It is understood that dancing was made more enjoyable when the floor responded to the rhythms.
The O'Neill family took over the ownership in 1959 and retained that reputation as an establishment that offered fine dining
The Spring House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. For many years it contained the Spring House Restaurant.
The Spring House was eventually purchased by Buckingham Properties and underwent extensive renovations. From 2000 to 2005 Buckingham also redeveloped the adjacent plaza into Spring House Commons. Northfield Food & Drink opened in 2006, replacing the Spring House Restaurant. It closed three years later. Today, the Spring House itself contains Monroe's Restaurant and the The Scofflaw at Monroe's.
