Thomas P. Ryan, Jr.

Thomas P. Ryan, Jr. was Rochester's 57th mayor, serving from 1974 to 1993. He was most known for his concern for the city's youth and young adults, and fought population decline through urban renewal projects.¹

Ryan was born in 1929, and grew up in Rochester, working in the Park Avenue neighborhood in his father's market. He was elected county supervisor in 1961, and was elected mayor of Rochester in 1974. He had a wife named Charlotte and a daughter named Mary.²

He passed away on March 14, 2003 at the age of 74. The Mayor Thomas P. Ryan, Jr. Community Center and Library is named in his memory.

He was succeeded by former mayor Bill Johnson.
