As a result, they carry all of the common parts and perform all of the time-worn services that many New Bike Retailers no longer provide. I'm talking about things like: derailer hangers for your 12-year-old aluminum-framed cross bike; hub bearings and bearing grease for rebuilding your worn-out 105's; actual cleaning supplies that aren't ridiculously marked up after being rebranded by the bicycle industry; replacement square-taper crankset spiders; miles of cable housing and cable; replacement derailers (in stock! not next week's order); bike rack hardware. But if you need a replacement rim to rebuild your 32-Spoke CXP-22's, one of the other shops will try to sell you a new set of Ksyriums and tubeless tires, Towner's won't do that, they'll rebuild your wheel.

+ 2013-08-19 14:52:59 nbsp As a retort to all the negative reviews: You'll get no argument from me that the service at Towners can be downright surly. Wal-mart trash bikes) are rarely worth fixing when they break. Also, yeah, bike mechanics often look down on non-bike people as being morons (and, frankly, they often are). But all that aside.....
+
+ Most of the things people say about Towners is true-lots of stock, they try to up-sell most of the time, yadda, yadda, yadda. I've found that their stock is usually fairly good, with a lot of less-common parts, especially when you get into the mountain bike and touring/hybrid worlds. Also, with a stock as large as they have, they also tend to have OLD parts more often than most shops (which is good for a retro-grouch like me). Just don't expect to get it cheap.
+
+ What I don't like about Towners (aside from the owner and about 1/2 of his employees) is that his stock of road bike parts is often incomplete. Sometimes he has new, expensive Campagnolo stuff, but he never has a selection of decent tubular tires. Sometimes they have a good selection of marked-down cycling wear, but just TRY to find the Yakima rack piece you really need. I asked if he could help me tune up my bike.
-
- The guy then spent 10 min. showing me how to use the bike pump, oil my chain, check my tires, and gave me a map of local places to bike. He pumped up my wheels, glanced over my bike to check that it was OK. All without buying anything at all, or suggesting I buy something. I bought some oil on the way out for my chain because I didn't want to walk out, after all that great help, without getting something. I haven't tried other bike shops in Rochester, but with service like that, I don't know if I'll ever be inclined to. -["FarMcKon"]

Line 24:

Line 19:

- 2007-05-18 11:18:23 nbsp Towners treated me fairly well. I would recommend Towners to anyone looking to buy a bike or have theirs serviced. --["DaveFranco"]
- ------
- 2007-05-18 21:43:19 nbsp My experience at Towner's is much closer to MattSnow's. I was in there last year looking for a helmet - a rather difficult process, since my head is quite large, and almost nobody stocks helmets my size. I assumed that if anyplace in Rochester would have one, Towner's would be the place. A rather stocky gentleman was the only one in the store - there were no other customers - and he acted as if it was a *huge* imposition when I asked for assistance. He wasn't even willing to check catalogs to see if they could order one my size. Quite honestly, he was one of the worst clerks I've ever encountered. Apparently he just really wanted to get back to the magazine he was reading when I came in.
-
- RV & E in Fairport, on the other hand, bent over backwards to find me one that would fit. The clerk was cheerful, helpful, friendly, and obviously quite knowledgeable. In that light, there's no way I would *ever* consider going back to Towner's. --["RichMulvey"]
- ------
- 2007-06-16 17:17:22 nbsp My experience is also closer to Matt Snow's. The first time I walked in there were three guys standing behind the counter playing with a laptop and ignoring everything else. This was fine since I don't like being bothered by salespeople. When I needed something, though, they acted like I was taking them away from something. This happened the next time I went in to buy 2 bikes. They weren't very helpful. The only reason I bought the bikes there is because only they had the Schwinn and Giant bikes recommended by Consumer Reports. When I hit a pothole and needed to fix the rear tire, the salesperson offered me a cheap replacement, relized it didn't fit, disappeared for 15 minutes and told me that they don't have what I needed. It would take a week to order and about $75. I went to another store and got it fixed for $25. --["SimosEconomides"]
- ------
- 2007-06-17 17:19:41 nbsp Went here the other day to look into a recumbent bike. Very disappointed. The big fat guy who works there (does he even ride bikes?) is a rude, condescending jerk who will try to make you feel stupid for asking any question. There are however a couple of good clerks, and Patrick who works in the shop is actually really nice. They have a decent selection of parts compared to some of the other local shops, but I would be hesitant about getting tune-up service done there. I had my MTB "Tuned-up" and got it back with both the wheels still out of true and the derailleurs still out of whack. Long story short: Enter with caution. --["JoeyMac"]
- ------
- 2007-11-26 14:54:15 nbsp I've had mixed experiences at Towners. I can't speak for the rest of the staff, but if you want to talk to a rude, snobby guy who looks like he doesn't get on a bike much if ever, this might be the place for you. --["Users/MMann"]

https://rocwiki.org/Towners_Bike_Shophttps://rocwiki.org/Towners_Bike_Shop?action=diff&version1=30&version2=31&ts=1266279860Towners Bike Shop2010-02-16T00:24:20Zpetebupdated hours
Differences for Towners Bike Shop

 Deletions are marked with - .

 Additions are marked with +.

Line 5:

Line 5:

- ||<class="tablehead">Hours (As of August 2009)||
- ||Monday - Friday: 10:00AM to 8:00PM||

+ ||<class="tablehead">Hours (As of February 2010)||
+ ||Monday - Friday: 11:00AM to 7:00PM||

Line 8:

Line 8:

- ||Sunday: Noon to 5:00PM||

https://rocwiki.org/Towners_Bike_Shophttps://rocwiki.org/Towners_Bike_Shop?action=diff&version1=29&version2=30&ts=1266279741Towners Bike Shop2010-02-16T00:22:21Zpetebredacted name
Differences for Towners Bike Shop

 Deletions are marked with - .

 Additions are marked with +.

Line 32:

Line 32:

- 2007-06-17 17:19:41 nbsp Went here the other day to look into a recumbent bike. I paid a fair price for the bike, which I have enjoyed immensely. However, the service since then has been inconsistent. First, they tune the bike before you leave, but as soon as I was out of the parking lot the chain started rattling loudly. I turned around and had them look at it. Sure enough, they said, the front derailleur had not been properly adjusted. The remarkable thing is that this happened two more times *the same day*. Each time, a different mechanic looked at it and each of them said it had not been properly adjusted. Oddly, it turned out that it was just something I was doing as an inexperienced rider (trying to ride in a gear such that the chain was at too much of a diagonal and scraped against the front derailleur cage). I finally figured this out when one of the mechanics (nice guy, small, shaved head) bothered to talk to me about it. The salesmen seem knowledgeable, but I agree they are a bit aloof. And I have to agree that the gentleman another reviewer described as fat is indeed someone I will avoid interacting with for the rest of my life. I took my bike into Full Moon Vista recently for a tune-up and they seem a lot better--they fit bikes that you buy from them, which Towner's did not do, for instance, and they are willing to show and explain to you what they're doing to your bike, and don't act annoyed if you are a novice and generally seem to want to share their customers' enthusiasm. --["Users/AlexFine"]

https://rocwiki.org/Towners_Bike_Shophttps://rocwiki.org/Towners_Bike_Shop?action=diff&version1=26&version2=27&ts=1249528874Towners Bike Shop2009-08-06T03:21:14Zpetebupdated hours
Differences for Towners Bike Shop

 Deletions are marked with - The big, fat turd that works in the front of the store treated me like crap the whole time I was there, basically inferring through body language, stares, and rude, curt replies that he did not want me there, and that it was a burden for him to answer any of my questions. Well the karma is back at this place because I highly recommend going elsewhere such as Freewheeler's on Mt Hope Ave. The shop might not be as big as Towner's, but at least the owner, Roger, treats you well and will spend more than enough time helping you out and getting what you need.
