I believe this is a good guideline to follow in the "comments" section of restaurant pages on RocWiki. Posting a comment is even more powerful than telling your friends, for it reaches the entire community. Negative comments do more harm to the restaurant than positive comments, and this type of PR will make locally owned restaurants less likely to succeed.<br> - <br> - Even a great restaurant is staffed by humans, humans make mistakes, and, if the restaurant is unlucky enough to have an insidious RocWiki editor as the customer, its reputation could be severly tarnished. On the other hand, if the food and service are well executed, and thus gets a positive comment on this wiki, it is simply making par, and the restaurant survives until the inevitable mistake. When that negative comment comes in, it makes the restaurant look unappealing. The less comments there are for a restaurant, the worse one individual negative comment will make the restaurant seem. At the dawn of 2007, restaurants are getting an average of 5 comments, which is low enough for any one negative comment to stand out. Most locally owned restaurants don't have the public relations capacity to correct their image, and, for many restaurants, RocWiki.org is their only Internet presence. Since RocWiki comments are mostly permanent, victim restaurants may never recover.<br> - <br> - Without the issue of web image, and seemingly unknownst to some RocWiki editors, the restaurant business is extremely tough. They need to manage food buying, employees, food preparation standards, seasonally changing menus, legal issues, cleanliness, delivery, and other tasks that make being a restaurant owner a hard, 24/7 job. Risking their livelihood in a trying economy, they spend millions on decor, advertising, salaries, and food costs. Restaurant servers are often overworked and underpaid. Their minimum wage is less than all other workers, because they can expect tips for their work. Many times, a RocWiki editor will nitpick a fine detail of the restaurant experience, and expose their story as a virtual tirade against the restaurant. Certain members of the RocWiki community only post negative comments. They don't consider the entire effort of serving food. One negative RocWiki comment makes all the restaurant's effort pointless.<br> - <br> - I say we help the brave souls who bring us delicious, creative food in a risky environment. Independent restauranteurs of Rochester: I salute your noble cause. Let's show more appreciation for these hard-working people and their contributions to the Rochester community. Think about the restaurants you've been to recently, and post comments if you liked them. If you didn't, let the management know, and then try it again a few times before posting a negative comment. We members who edit restaurant pages must understand and respect the power of RocWiki.</span> </td> <td> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 20: </td> <td> Line 11: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <span>- ------<br> - ------<br> - 2007-02-06 04:08:09 nbsp Okay, seriously now, a problem: all-positive reviews lack street cred. They seem orchestrated—what you're actually suggesting—and when readers figure it out, they discount the source, us. Such schemes also favor widely popular establishments over better but unknown ones. Popularity is a vicious cycle of positive feedback, breeding conventional wisdom, discouraging innovation and competition. Witness the challengers to the Dinosaur (which has served the same menu since opening) or potential challengers to Wegmans: no Trader Joe's, no downtown grocery. --["JohnLam"]<br> - ------<br> - 2007-02-06 07:42:18 nbsp I understand the desire to support independent restaurants, but I agree with John that holding back on negative comments isn't going to help them or RocWiki in the long run. Also, a lot of the nit-picky comments you reference were attached to restaurants where the bill for two with drinks is around $100. That's a significant investment, and it's OK to have high expectations when spending that much on dinner. --["RottenChester"]<br> - ------<br> - 2007-02-06 10:26:45 nbspYou're right to say something, Ben. Most of us who write reviews do so because we love food, and love eating out, so we certainly don't intend to cause any harm to the local rectaurant business. Honestly, I'll take a mediocre meal at a local dive over a meal at a chain any day. I think as long as we're constructive with our criticism, we can keep the restaurant page useful. Check out the comments for ["Bruegger's"] for an example of negative criticism that isn't constructive. If there's a problem, state what it is....don't just say "The service sucks" or "The Food is Terrible". --["EastSideStephen"]<br> - ------<br> - 2007-02-06 10:42:06 nbsp Anyway, I think the best way to fight the oncoming tide of Applebees, Chilis, and Olive Gardens is to dine out at independent restaurants as much as possible, and write about it every time. It's well known that people talk about their bad experiences more often than their good ones. If we make it a point to write about every positive or negative experience we have, the positive reviews will surely outnumber the bad. I think I have written about 25 or so restaurants on here, and I can think of only one that was entirely negative. --["EastSideStephen"]<br> - ------<br> - 2007-02-06 16:06:51 nbsp First, let me say thank you for spending the time to voice your thoughts. Now, while I'm all for supporting independent restaurants, I don't think it's appropriate to ask RocWiki editors to hold back their opinions when writing comments. Rather, I would encourage some notice or method of encouraging readers to consider the source. I would guess that some people who read RocWiki don't take what's written here with a grain of salt, as they should. I think some people need to be informed that the wiki is very open and based on a limited number of viewpoints. That said, I also think we should encourage editors to make thorough comments and elaborate on what they did or did not like. I'll be the first to admit that many of my comments are not as well written as they could be. If someone does leave a vague comment, ask them to explain. --["StevenDibelius"]<br> - ------<br> - 2007-03-22 21:14:22 nbsp I agree with ["EastSideStephen"] that the best way accurately depict the quality of a restaurant is to have many people comment on it, good and bad. That will build a consensus. The negative comments can actually be useful to a restauranteur who wants to check up on the image of his establishment. So, if we're going to have comments on a wiki, let's encourage people to add their comments, whether they had a great experience or not. Then, the good restaurants will have more positive comments than bad. --["BenMargolis"]<br> - ------<br> - 2007-03-31 17:24:36 nbsp Ben, i'm not sure why a search for “RocWiki” at Google ranks my page so. Sometimes Far's IndustrialSomething appears second right after the ["Front Page"], and other times mine does. Yet other times it appears nowhere in the top 20. A search for pages linking to my contributor page reveals nothing, even though a few of my pages do link it. Maybe the sheer volume of pages needing indexing causes a [wiki:Wikipedia:race_condition] on Google. --["JohnLam"]<br> - ------<br> - 2007-07-16 20:46:24 nbsp Ben? Others (JohnLam and StevenDibelius) have already expressed their concerns and I fully agree with them. I’d just like to add that, for me, Internet is becoming a terrific resource in discovering new restaurants (and foods and wines).<br> - When I started my journey in food and wine (almost 17 years ago) the only sources available were restaurant guides (mainly Michelin guide) and word of mouth. Moreover, “fine dining” restaurants were (and still are) very expensive in Italy, so it was really difficult to know someone who routinely visited more than a few of them. At the end, I relied on restaurant guides and tried to read most of them but, still, I felt sometime disappointed or cheated (did the author really visit the place? was the owner bribing the editors to get a more favorable review?); in addition, printed guides, published usually once per year, were really slow in discovering new restaurants or changes in already reviewed ones (change of ownership, a chef who left, ...)<br> - In the last 4-5 years, Internet has been radically changing this scenario: newsgroups and web sites allow people to share their opinions nearly in real time; now I can find dozens of reviews of the same place, and most of them are surprisingly very well written.<br> - I agree that anonymity (or semi-anonymity like what we have on RocWiki) could help people who just like posting negative comments and bashing others but, on the other side, I don’t think that a comment like “the service sucks” would really steer serious customers away. Also, enthusiastic reviews without substantive evidences are as fishy as destructive ones. Authors must build their reputation by editing pages and comments. Anyway, more education and awareness for casual users would be recommendable.<br> - Finally, what I do when I write a review is to clearly state my expectations and point out if they have been met or not, so readers can decide by themselves whether they care for the same things or not (and trust me or not, of course). I must add that, not being a native English speaker, my comments might be skewed by cultural gap: so, please, if you feel that my comments are unfair, misleading or simply not clear enough, just tell me so. --["AndreaCogliati"]<br> - ------<br> - 2007-12-17 17:05:15 nbsp @MichaelWildman and BadFish I am a former owner of FlavorStream, a restaurant consultancy that runs RochesterMenus.com as well as a few other websites. --["BenMargolis"]<br> - ------<br> - 2008-03-05 11:55:28 nbsp Hi Ben. I must add that, not being a native English speaker, my comments might be skewed by cultural gap: so, please, if you feel that my comments are unfair, misleading or simply not clear enough, just tell me so. --["AndreaCogliati"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> https://rocwiki.org/Users/BenMargolishttps://rocwiki.org/Users/BenMargolis?action=diff&version1=40&version2=41&ts=1196720160Users/BenMargolis2007-12-03T22:16:00ZAndreaCogliatiComment added. <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Users/BenMargolis<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 41: </td> <td> Line 41: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ ------<br> + 2007-12-03 18:16:00 nbsp My comment here --["AndreaCogliati"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> https://rocwiki.org/Users/BenMargolishttps://rocwiki.org/Users/BenMargolis?action=diff&version1=39&version2=40&ts=1189434274Users/BenMargolis2007-09-10T14:24:34ZSteveTylockComment added. <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Users/BenMargolis<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 39: </td> <td> Line 39: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ ------<br> + 2007-09-10 10:24:34 nbsp Ben - I'm trying to reach you to invite Transitions to Digital Rochester's Get Connected! event in October - please drop me an email (The email we have on file for Transitions bounced...) --["SteveTylock"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> https://rocwiki.org/Users/BenMargolishttps://rocwiki.org/Users/BenMargolis?action=diff&version1=38&version2=39&ts=1187787475Users/BenMargolis2007-08-22T12:57:55ZbadfishComment added. <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Users/BenMargolis<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 37: </td> <td> Line 37: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ ------<br> + 2007-08-22 08:57:55 nbsp @Michael - I believe Ben is an owner for some sort of web based business that seems to help restaurants reach customers, including handling delivery. --["BadFish"]</span> </td> </tr> </table> </div> https://rocwiki.org/Users/BenMargolishttps://rocwiki.org/Users/BenMargolis?action=diff&version1=37&version2=38&ts=1184633184Users/BenMargolis2007-07-17T00:46:24ZMichaelWildmanComment added. <div id="content" class="wikipage content"> Differences for Users/BenMargolis<p><strong></strong></p><table> <tr> <td> <span> Deletions are marked with - . </span> </td> <td> <span> Additions are marked with +. </span> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> Line 35: </td> <td> Line 35: </td> </tr> <tr> <td> </td> <td> <span>+ ------<br> + 2007-07-16 20:46:24 nbsp Ben? I believe this is a good guideline to follow in the "comments" section of restaurant pages on RocWiki. Posting a comment is even more powerful than telling your friends, for it reaches the entire community. Negative comments do more harm to the restaurant than positive comments, and this type of PR will make locally owned restaurants less likely to succeed.<br> + <br> + Even a great restaurant is staffed by humans, humans make mistakes, and, if the restaurant is unlucky enough to have an insidious RocWiki editor as the customer, its reputation could be severly tarnished. Since RocWiki comments are mostly permanent, victim restaurants may never recover.<br> + <br> + Without the issue of web image, and seemingly unknownst to some RocWiki editors, the restaurant business is extremely tough.
