If you are a student, I definitely recommend staying over the summer to get a sense of what Rochester is like. When I was in college I started a business that did food delivery and online ordering for restaurants, but I have since pursued other interests. I was also in a band called People's Donut, later Element Groove, where I was playing reggae and funk on my saxophone. I am relocating to Boston in August because ["RachelBlumenthal" Rachel] is going to grad school at BU. I'll be paying nearly twice as much for a worse apartment, woo hoo! I believe this is a good guideline to follow in the "comments" section of restaurant pages on RocWiki. Posting a comment is even more powerful than telling your friends, for it reaches the entire community. Negative comments do more harm to the restaurant than positive comments, and this type of PR will make locally owned restaurants less likely to succeed. - - Even a great restaurant is staffed by humans, humans make mistakes, and, if the restaurant is unlucky enough to have an insidious RocWiki editor as the customer, its reputation could be severly tarnished. On the other hand, if the food and service are well executed, and thus gets a positive comment on this wiki, it is simply making par, and the restaurant survives until the inevitable mistake. When that negative comment comes in, it makes the restaurant look unappealing. The less comments there are for a restaurant, the worse one individual negative comment will make the restaurant seem. At the dawn of 2007, restaurants are getting an average of 5 comments, which is low enough for any one negative comment to stand out. Most locally owned restaurants don't have the public relations capacity to correct their image, and, for many restaurants, RocWiki.org is their only Internet presence. Since RocWiki comments are mostly permanent, victim restaurants may never recover. - - Without the issue of web image, and seemingly unknownst to some RocWiki editors, the restaurant business is extremely tough. They need to manage food buying, employees, food preparation standards, seasonally changing menus, legal issues, cleanliness, delivery, and other tasks that make being a restaurant owner a hard, 24/7 job. Risking their livelihood in a trying economy, they spend millions on decor, advertising, salaries, and food costs. Restaurant servers are often overworked and underpaid. Their minimum wage is less than all other workers, because they can expect tips for their work. Many times, a RocWiki editor will nitpick a fine detail of the restaurant experience, and expose their story as a virtual tirade against the restaurant. Certain members of the RocWiki community only post negative comments. They don't consider the entire effort of serving food. One negative RocWiki comment makes all the restaurant's effort pointless. - - I say we help the brave souls who bring us delicious, creative food in a risky environment. Independent restauranteurs of Rochester: I salute your noble cause. Let's show more appreciation for these hard-working people and their contributions to the Rochester community. Think about the restaurants you've been to recently, and post comments if you liked them. If you didn't, let the management know, and then try it again a few times before posting a negative comment. We members who edit restaurant pages must understand and respect the power of RocWiki.
