- The Buffalo Sabres are on a massive hot streak right now, and that uncontrollable fever is spreading like an epidemic throughout Rochester. The Sabres won the President's Trophy as the team with the best record in the regular season, and that steam carried through with them into the playoffs. The earned the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference with their 53-22-7 record earning them 113 points. In the first round of the playoffs the Sabres faced off against the New York Islanders and won the best of seven games series, 4 games as opposed to the single game the Islanders won. The very thought of Buffalo finally bringing home a championship, after losing in the Stanley Cup Finals in 1999 on the famous "No Goal" play and of course the four straight Super Bowl losses, is doing so much more than merely exciting the residents of Western New York, it motivates them. - - Another reason many fans in Rochester are extremely excited would be due to the fact that the local hockey club, the Rochester Americans, or Amerks as they are commonly reffered to as, is the farm team for the Sabres. The Amerks are having a great season themselves, but they emerged into the national eye when several Sabres' went down with injuries and Lindy Ruff, the head coach of Buffalo, had to call up several Amerks'. Players like Drew Stafford, Michael Ryan, Patrick Kaleta, Clarke MacArthur, and Nathan Paetsch proved clutch for the sabres helping them to a winning record throughout that tedious stretch.
