A lot of nifty art and engineering projects end up needing some metal work being done. Welding, of course, is the best way to get 2 chunks of metal to stick together.

There are rumors of local shops where you can take welding classes, and while you are in classes get access to the shop, in all it's glory. I've heard it's cheaper to take the class (and not do any work) to get access to the shop, than it is to pay 'rent' for space in the shop. All second-hand rumors, btw.
