I believe this is a great tradition for collaborative effort. However, interaction among the editors is somewhat cumbersome - they must comment on the Talk page of an active entry, post comments in each other's user page, etc. Currently, multiple editors can be editing a page at the same time. Some wiki sites have a related forum for interactive discussions about editing of entries (vs comments containing content). We have the Google Group, but it is not very interactive. Perhaps a page ["RocWiki Editing Today"] could be a place where active editors could post their current planned activity, coordinate work on entries (or related entries) and build a historical record of the growth of RocWiki. That will allow links to the page to still serve a use, and not bring up 'Create this page'. Existing links pointing to the dead page, all those not yet pruned, would not yield such a confusing result that way, and the same goes for external links pointing at wiki content. $.02 --["RobertPolyn"]
- ------
- 2007-01-24 18:03:25 nbsp The ones I deleted no longer serve a purpose... --["PeterBoulay"]
- ------
- 2007-01-24 19:34:43 nbsp Not denying that at all, but I think having the page point to the (corrected from above) 'Gone, but not forgotten' page would serve the wiki best---allowing anyone directed to what once had been a page to know that it no longer exists. Navigating to a deleted page (say through Google) will display 'Create this page'. If instead of deleting the page redirection was used, I think that would be more useful. The more I think of it, the less I like the idea of deleting pages at all, but I think redirection is a solid middle ground. --["RobertPolyn"]
- ------
- 2007-01-24 19:42:48 nbsp I am really against deleting anything. I don't know anything about the technical side of things--are we worried about wasting space? Anyway, here's an example: if I move away and come back in a few years and try to look up the info for a restaurant I used to like, I'd find it really frustrating to find the "Creat this page" page. I'd want to know when it closed, why, if it relocated, etc. The wiki has plenty of pages pertaining to Rochester's history, and I think restaurants and stores that have closed belong to that history just as much as anything else, regardless of how long they were open. Somewhere out there, there's someone who's interested to know the details of what happened to a particular business. Anyway, as long as there are no technical cons to keeping around old pages, I really would like to at least see redirection, but I'd prefer to just keep the pages. That way, people can discuss why they closed, if they're ever re-opening, etc. --["RachelBlumenthal"]
- ------
- 2007-01-24 19:51:19 nbsp If you unlink the dead ones there's nothing to navigate to... :) My idea-come to the next meeting and we'll all discuss it --["PeterBoulay"]
- ------
- 2007-01-24 21:44:59 nbsp My $.02: I'm OK with deleting a page that has absolutely no original content. For example, a page that has nothing but, say, an address and phone number. Anything else should be retained with a note that it closed. Also, I agree with Robert that we should hash this out here, because few people come to wiki meetups. --["RottenChester"]
- ------
- 2007-01-24 22:22:46 nbsp Is there a way to delete all past revisions and just keep the final revision for places that have closed? That should save some space if space is the problem. I also agree that final decisions should be made here--I, for one, did not consider going to the meet-up because it sounded like it was focused more on the technical aspects of the wiki, but I'd be happy to go to meet-ups to talk about the general direction in which the wiki is headed. --["RachelBlumenthal"]
- ------
- 2007-01-24 23:36:14 nbsp I agree with RottenChester. If the page had no original content, I don't see any reason to keep it around if the business it refers to has closed. However, people seem to really want to keep pages, and I'd be surprised if space was an issue, so if people really want to keep everything then I guess that's fine. I also agree with Rachel that meetings always sound like they're focused on the technical aspects of the site. I'd be more inclined to go to meetings which also included the non-technical aspects of the site. --["StevenDibelius"]
- ------
- 2007-01-24 23:52:14 nbsp The last couple Wiki Development meetings have included both tech and non tech stuff. Future meetings can be segmented so that tech talk is scheduled for the first hour and community stuff the second. This would allow folks to come and go based on their interest.
-
- While the meetings are good time to bring these issues up, I also agree that we should hash this out on the site. I favor a no delete policy that redirects pages lacking substantial content to a Gone, but not forgotten page (this means leaving the original content and adding a redirect flag). Pages that have substantial content and/or discussion should be left. --["AdamDewitz"]
- ------
- 2007-01-25 10:05:57 nbsp Add me to the "Do Not Delete" team. Advantages of deletion and advantages of deletion over redirection would be useful. --["RobertPolyn"]
- ------
- 2007-01-25 13:32:46 nbsp If you want reasons for why pages should be deleted, I don't have any for you. My opinion is just more out of apathy. I don't think it's a crisis if the pages in question get deleted. At the same time, I don't think it's hurting anything by keeping them. Ultimately, I don't think this decision has any significant effects on rocwiki, so I don't care much what people decide. As a side note/response to Roc4Life, you can get to the old Dicky's page by searching "Dicky's", clicking create a new page, and clicking the Info button. You'll then see the revision history of the page, and can revert it back to a state where it did exist. As for noise factor, I don't really see that as a problem; I imagine most people would just figure out that either link got them to the D&C article. I think having the redirect is valuable because it makes wiki-linking easier. If you have commonly used names redirecting to the article with the proper name, people can easily link to the correct article without needing to figure out what the exact name of the article is. I guess that would turn the discussion into which is more valuable: having a less cluttered search or having an easy time making wiki-links. Navigating to a deleted page (say through Google) will display 'Create this page'. If instead of deleting the page redirection was used, I think that would be more useful. The more I think of it, the less I like the idea of deleting pages at all, but I think redirection is a solid middle ground. --["RobertPolyn"]

https://rocwiki.org/Wiki_Community/Talkhttps://rocwiki.org/Wiki_Community/Talk?action=diff&version1=8&version2=9&ts=1169679805Wiki Community/Talk2007-01-24T23:03:25ZpetebComment added.
Differences for Wiki Community/Talk

Deletions are marked with - .

 Additions are marked with +.

Line 7:

Line 7:

+ ------
+ 2007-01-24 18:03:25 nbsp The ones I deleted no longer serve a purpose... --["PeterBoulay"]

https://rocwiki.org/Wiki_Community/Talkhttps://rocwiki.org/Wiki_Community/Talk?action=diff&version1=7&version2=8&ts=1169678324Wiki Community/Talk2007-01-24T22:38:44ZRobertPolynaccidentally hit enter, finished comment
Differences for Wiki Community/Talk

Deletions are marked with - .

 Additions are marked with +.

Line 6:

Line 6:

- 2007-01-24 17:36:18 nbsp On the subject of deleting pages for things that no longer exist in the Rochester area---how about redirecting the current page to the 'lost but not forgotten page' and adding a note at the top of it regarding "if you've reached this page, then (perhaps) sadly...".
