2008-11-22 06:28:14   Now that it's open, we stopped at Sakura Home to check out the decor and menu. The slight tackiness of the exterior belies how nice, clean and classy it is inside. The menu offers a large selection of sushi fare, along with a few appetizers and hot dishes from the kitchen. We were greeted by a friendly hostess who provided a take-home menu, and the place looked generally busy and well-staffed. We'll definitely be coming back to try a meal here! —daverea

2008-11-24 11:16:46   The building is an old China Buffet. When we saw that it was under construction with a sign out front that read “Coming soon, Sakura Home Japanese Restaurant”, we were scared. The city does not need another stuff-yourself-until-you-are-bloated, sub par Asian buffet. Yet when it finally opened, curiosity got the better of us.

Upon entering, we were immediately pleased with what we found. The old buffet was gone, with a classy and chic Japanese restaurant in its place. Natural wood and glass, textured metal, and oriental lanterns replaced the cheesy Chinese décor that is often found in your run of the mill Chinese restaurants. In the center of the receiving area was a large water feature, tastefully done, complete with a bridge that led you into the dining room.

As we were led to our table, I noticed a beautiful bar area adorned with small glass mosaic tile. In the center of the lounge was a baby grand piano…sitting silent, yet yearning for someone to play. Unfortunately, the shelves of the bar were empty…the restaurant was awaiting their liquor license. That upset me a bit, for I was looking forward to some sake, but I did not let that influence my opinion of the place.

To the left of the dining room and though an archway, I spied another section peppered with hibachi tables. We were offered that dining option yet politely declined. We were here for sushi, and I could see at the back of the room the chef was eagerly waiting for my order.

After being seated, we scanned the menu to find some very nice selections being offered. There were hot appetizers, noodle and rice dishes, and a wide variety of sushi on the list, along with various lunch specials. It was a good looking menu, with the exception that the dishes were about one dollar more expensive than our usual sushi joint.

The server, who was very attentive through out our meal, graciously took our order of various rolls and appetizers. Within a short time frame, the meal arrived. I was surprised at the freshness of the food. In addition, the presentation was modern and classy. The dishes were chic and the items were pretty. Although everything looked and tasted good, there was not a single selection that instigated the “wow” factor. The meal was enjoyable, yet standard.

With great service, fresh food, and a cool atmosphere, we will definitely return to sample some other dishes, yet I was looking for a new establishment to call or “regular place”. Sakura Home delivered a fine experience, yet we will more than likely stick to our old favorite. —MiguelVargas

2008-12-16 09:04:17   Excellent! Terrific sushi and hibachi! Yes, they finally have their liquor license. The building is renovated and lovely. Check out the ladies room...it's probably the prettiest in the city! The staff was friendly and attentive. My filet mignon was cooked perfectly, extra rare, which is almost impossible anywhere el! The salad was crisp with a tasty ginger dressing. We've been here three times and will continue to return. My son indicated that his sushi was probably the best in the city. We have visited three times and have always been greeted promptly at arrival. Management is always visible and the staff inquires on the quality of your dinner. Give it a try. I know that we'll be back. The owner also owns the Plumhouse on Monroe Avenue. This is truly a gem of a restaurant. —Sam

2008-12-22 23:41:57   Tonight I went to Sakura House and was not a happy camper.... First... all 5 of our entrees came at VERY different times.. sushi came to one party at one time... and then a half hour later to another... water was never refilled, the calamari was fusion food .. if fusion meant..japanese theme mixed with Dennys... and there was tartar sauce for dipping.. for $9... thats about 75 cents per ring of calamari... looked freshly unfrozen..steak tasted a bit dinerish as well... the negimaki.. was negi-crappy... now at the very end... when asking where the softshell crab was... the completely clueless waitress said..."oh.. i guess it never came out" in about as ambivalent a tone as possible. the last entree came when everyone else was done eating... we did return the calimari and thankfull, wasnt billed for it.

also, why this place looks so elegant on the inside and like a cheap xmas tree on the outside... is beyond me. i give it.

2008-12-28 18:32:35   Mmmmm.... sushi: amazing. Sake menu: extensive! And the sushi is super fresh (none of that over-wasabifying to hide the taste of old fish.) The owner may be persuaded to do sake tasting events if enough people want it, so ask! —JenBeaven

2009-01-07 10:55:19   Went last night with my rents. We were first seated in the hibachi room in the corner...next a fire exit. We felt a slight draft and were considering getting moved when they turned on the fans for the tables. It was freezing and so we moved. The food was good but arrived at the tables at different times. The miso soup was really good, but I would have preferred them using a less silky tofu. My dad enjoyed his sashmi. I liked my rolls very much, just the right amount of spicy. I like the place and will be back but they were a little disorganized. Hopefully they will work it out. —BadFish

2009-01-25 19:43:19   We saw the signs up for this place months and months ago prior to opening and couldn't wait to give it a try. Today, Sunday, we turned into a dead-looking parking lot a few minutes after 12 pm only to find that the parking lot was completely empty and the place was closed. What gives? Is it closed for good, closed on Sunday or what? We then went back to Pittsford Plaza to another place and saw that Plum House, another sushi/hibachi place supposedly under the same management also looked closed. EEKK!! Hopefully someone will see this an console my fears, not another local place going under!?! Thanks for any further information you can offer! —StephanieTodd

2009-04-07 11:42:14   This restaurant has a beautiful bar, and the nicest decor for a sushi joint in Rochester. The service was a bit spotty, but the beautiful sashimi and sushi presentation almost makes you forget that. Prices are a bit higher than other places in Rochester, but if you'd like the aesthetics of a well-decorated dinning room then Sakura is the place to go. —EllenKelsey

2009-04-10 10:40:24   Went a few days ago with friend visiting from Long Island. We loved the decor of the place and the server was attentive. The Sushi and Sashimi dishes were excellent. The raw scallops appetizer was interesting. Our spouses both had a thick noodle soup that was OK but not the most enjoyable item on the menu. —ScottHendler

2009-04-14 20:01:31   Overall very nice. Miso was good, salad very fresh although dressing was more like honey-mustard than the usual ginger dressing. The edamame should have come out before the meals but came with them, poor timing. We had Chirashi, and everything on the plate was very good, fresh and tasty, with the exception of the Tamago, which was a big let down, the texture was all wrong and it was very watery. 2009-05-08 22:03:20   we like hibachi at plum garden, arigato, and tokyo, and decided to give this hibachi a try. we were pretty disappointed. they used no sesame seeds, which is arguably the best part of hibachi rice. they used a lot of a sweet dark sauce on everything which made it taste more like greasy chinese food than fresh hibachi. 2 people who ordered steak, one medium and one medium rare, both received their steak at the same time, so at least one of them was cooked wrong. the sukiyaki steak was covered in a syrupy sweet sauce, and the shrimp did not taste very good either. redeeming factors were the tasty salad dressing, and the cute wooden soup bowls. —DanetteFitzgerald

2009-06-10 13:33:29   I hosted a corporate dinner event here and was thoroughly pleased with Sakura Home. They were extremely accomodating, and all of my guests had positive feedback for the fun atmosphere and great dining experience. Personally, I enjoyed the food, and having dined at many hibachi places across the Northeast, I have to say that Sakura was one of the better meals. —MerCDotes

2009-07-21 20:00:06   I literally just returned from this restaurant. So far since moving to Rochester I have been highly disappointed in all Hibachi restaurants...until tonight. My boyfriend had the steak which was cooked perfectly, my chicken was so moist and tender it was unbelievable! The meat was wonderful, service friendly, and I would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone. I will be returning (hopefully sooner rather than later!) —KellyT

2009-08-30 13:43:21   We have been here several times. While the sushi is always excellent the service gets worse and worse. Once we went there and they were spraying cleaning fluid on the table next to us. (There are ways to clean a table without toxic smelling sprays), the next visit we couldn't get our waitresses attention because she was too busy lugging a slop bucket around the room cleaning the floor with....yes...more disgusting smelling fumes. Last night we went and they reached a pinnacle. They were literally hosing down the hibachi side of the restaurant with the most awful smelling cleanser you could imagine. The sushi side of the restaurant was busy and most tables were staring at the staff in disbelief. There was water, fumes, and suds flying all over the place literally 15 feet from where customers were eating. I have never in my life seen anything like this. It was disgusting. I worked in restaurants all through college and grad school and understand wanting to get out of work but this was bizarre and I cant believe a manager allowed it.

We are taking a break from this place. My throat is still sore from the fumes and our dinner was ruined. (The manager comped our wine after we complained.) I hope they get it together because the fish is great if your eyes are not watering and your throat closing from toxic fumes. —JamesPatrick

2009-09-15 20:33:36   I went here for the first time and was very underwhelmed. I only at from the Sushi Bar menu, not the Hibachi. I went with my girlfriend and we ordered a sushi and sashimi combo, tuna tataki and hamachi kama (yellow tail cheek). The only thing I liked was the hamachi. My girlfriend didn't like anything. There menu is very similar to Shiki and they are MUCH better. If you were thinking of going to Sakura Home check out Shiki instead. —JakeBurgholzer

Simply put the food is great the service is great and the restaurant is spotless, Clean is a good thing although it may not have been done at an improper time. —dream2112line

2010-02-14 13:30:01   7 of us were there for hibachi last week. The parking lot was absolutely packed - people were parking in the neighbouring lot. The decor is elegant. The hibachi was pretty good. The sukiyaki steak was tender and flavourful. I also liked the shrimp appetizer included with every hibachi option. We also tried the spicy salmon roll - it was good but there was no tobiko in it as stated on the menu. The service was not great. The server kept leaving in the midst of us asking her questions. This place is definitely one of more expensive/high end/nicer hibachi places in town - which is why I was really surprised that I was charged per glass of soda (i.e no free refills). There was no indication of this on the menu. They have a full bar so odds are they don't use individual cans of soda to prepare alcoholic beverages. I am not quite sure how they can justify charging per glass of soda. But the food was good so I will probably return. —OneLove

2011-03-10 18:49:37   they made me wait 20 minutes for an order of sushi...AFTER I called in for it 15 minutes before I arrived. So 35 minutes for overpriced, not-bad sushi. I'll just stick with wegmans. —heyhowareyou

2014-05-04 12:04:11   Good solid sushi on a recent visit. Atmosphere is a bit more contemporary than some Japanese spots. Lots of children on the Friday evening we were there. Service was prompt and efficient. —jgerek
