Horatio Gates General Horatio Gates defeated British forces in the 1777 Battle of Saratoga, widely regarded as a turning point in the Revolutionary War. He went on to serve in the New York State Assembly around the turn of the century.
The town of Gates was named after him when it was incorporated on April 1, 1813.1
