2020-12-06 20:50:53   Regarding the September 19, 2020 shooting: Here are some comments based on a D&C article today, December 6. In defense of the city and police, the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed court proceedings, which impacts arrests. When a suspect in the shooting is arrested for some other crime, possible witnesses to the shooting may be more willing to make statements to the police than if the suspects are free. Also, in cases with multiple potential suspects, the police prefer to question or detain all the suspects simultaneously. Since this incident involves at least a couple hundred witnesses and neighbors, it has been a slow process. Still, it is unclear how much help any witnesses may have provided, although one imagines the police have been knocking on a lot of doors. —GaryGocek

2021-01-19 21:11:20   Regarding the September 19, 2020 shooting: The organizer of the "small" party (a 19-year old woman at her sister's house) was befriended in the days after the shooting by a Monroe County legislator (a 40-something married man). The legislator is now being investigated over an incident in which he texted an explicit image to the young woman. He says he accidentally sent the image to the young woman instead of to his own wife. The police have announced no progress in the shooting investigation. —GaryGocek

2023-08-05 18:50:32   My entries in 2023 are not exactly individual mass-shooting incidents, i.e., there are separate perpetrators. But when 8 people get shot or stabbed in one night, I feel this needs to be shared. I hope someone, anyone feels pressured to help resolve this chaos, even if it's just private citizens whose family members are the perps. This whole article should not exist, but these events continue to occur, and someone isn't doing enough to stop them. —GaryGocek

2024-07-30 08:06:36   Hi Mark Jackson, regarding the ugly code on this mass shootings page, I'm sure I originally copied that off some other page with a tabular display. But I don't remember where. If you can point me to an example of a different Rocwiki page with a table and cleaner wiki code, please send that to me. I would rework the code. —GaryGocek

2024-07-30 14:34:09   Yes, I see that this WikiCode is more rigid than HTML, in particular about inserting whitespace. Even a blank line separating rows messes it up. I find one can separate rows by inserting a comment marker "##" at the head of an otherwise blank line without changing the page appearance. Whether this is worth the trouble - or any improvement in readability at all - isn't clear. —markjackson

2024-09-04 11:48:41   I don't like renaming it to to mass homicides. Haven't there been multiple people shot without a death? That would be important to list. The problem is, I don't have a great alternative to suggest. That's a tough one. Maybe something like massing shootings or mass killings? With the current title, there are 7 or 8 events that should be removed from that page, given the title.
Or, change it back to mass shootings and create a new page for mass homicides?
I'm not sure. I don't want to come off as criticizing the change, I'm also having trouble trying to figure out the best way to convey the info. —badfish

2024-10-12 11:09:05   Agreed, some events had no homicides (only injuries). I think there should just be one page. I think there is some (morbid) interest in mass attacks, but I don't think anyone would expect to look for mass stabbings separately from mass shootings. I changed the original name was because of the 2024 stabbings on Knapp (not a shooting). I am thinking, Mass Homicides/Assaults around Rochester (not sure if the slash will be allowed). I suppose this could refer to a drunken bar brawl with a few bruised egos, but the page is really aimed at a focused attack from one or a few people causing mass casualties. I supposed it is weird of me to be so interested in this at all, but I would argue that 50 shots fired in a parking lot is a notable event that people should know about and be upset about. I will look into the new name (homicides/assaults). —GaryGocek
