2010-06-21 15:03:36 I went here with my girlfriend and a couple friends from out of town for Sunday brunch. Someone clearly put a lot of care into decorating the place and they achieved a classy, yet comfortable feel. I had the Irish oatmeal with raspberries, which was delicious, and my friends were pleased with an omelet and the mac and cheese fritatta. We really enjoyed their potato sides, which were far more inventive than the usual treatments. Their homefries with carmelized onion are crisp and nicely seasoned, and their french fries are curried, which is something I hadn't seen before and quite tasty. Service was excellent; our server even proactively offered to split the check. It's very affordable for a restaurant of this quality. We will be going back. —JohnBrach

2010-07-10 00:49:55 Probably the most unfortunate experience I've ever had in a Rochester restaurant. We were a party of four and were seated at a dining table in the front window. The first person who visited our table asked if we were having anything other than water to drink, to which my boyfriend replied, "may we see a wine list." Nope, we were told. But you can have a coke. When our server made her way over, she told us "I wasn't supposed to be your server, you were the surprise table." Um, okay...SURPRISE!! Then, another server made her way over and reiterated that A) our table was a surprise, B) The server who originally imparted this information to us was our server, and finally C) she retook our nonalcoholic drink orders.
Our cokes came and we ordered our entrees; and after a short time our server returned to present a bread basket and some honey butter and then walk away, seemingly not realizing that we'd be challenged to put the butter to use without bread plates.
My 'classic' macaroni and cheese arrived room temperature in a warm bowl. If there was truffle oil in it, it was undetectable, and for that matter, so was the cheese. It was barely-coated pasta topped with a tablespoon of diced tomato, known to these people apparently as marinara rustica. A good mac n'cheese is always a comfort food, but sadly there was nothing comfortable about my trip to Shea's. Oh, and I almost forgot...my boyfriend's burger wasn't cooked through in the center, and when he asked our waitress for ketchup, she said "the ketchup's 86'ed" !!!!! They ran out of ketchup!!—ASanderson
2010-08-05 16:33:15 Recently visited for lunch and it took extraordinarily long. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the server was friendly. I agree with the previous post that their mac and cheese is underwhelming. I ordered the 3 way sampler of mac and cheese and all 3 kinds were served in one dish so they all jumbled together. There was hardly any cheese in any of them and they weren't very flavorful. My friend ordered the stuffed meatloaf sandwhich which didn't have much meatloaf. Next time I'll spend a couple more bucks elsewhere to get good food. —KatD

2010-08-30 19:53:00 i was there recently and it is evident from the other peoples comments that didn't have a good experience something has certainly changed. This place was amazing ! i enjoyed my steak special of the evening that was only 16.95 and should have been $30.00 dollars somewhere else. The service was attentive, very knowledgeable and atmosphere very friendly... this has a real fun family vibe to it ! what a great place.. this is my new favorite place to eat —DrAndrewVenti
2010-11-11 00:27:08 I am in Rochester often, so I have eaten at a lot of places. Shea's was one of the best I've eaten at.
I went with my boyfriend, who got a salad and the parchment wrapped fish. These were just average— nothing special. We both loved the bread and butter, which sounds weird, but the butter was very sweet. We couldn't stop munching on the bread, it was so delicious.
We ordered the macaroni and cheese as an appetizer. Delicious! The flavors were very sophisticated, without losing the true "comfort food" feeling. I ordered the chicken milanese, and this dish was a knockout! It was a bit salty, but definitely one of my all-time favorite chicken dishes. The tomatoes and herbs on top were the key to the dish, and were divine. Even my boyfriend was blown away by how delicious it was.
Our service was slow...but to be honest, my food was worth it. As far as dishes, don't be afraid to try things that sound a little different: the dishes that showcase the chef's imagination are the most delicious. I'd highly recommend Shea's! —JenS
2010-11-20 20:23:03 I went to Shea's with my husband and his family...and while the atmosphere is certainly wonderful, the food was just ok and on top of that it was pretty much dead when we got there, but our food took forever!! We also had a waiter/waitress issue, and both of the people forgot to bring us things we had requested. I had the chicken milanese which was around $13, and for that price, I should have gotten more food! My plate came with a small chicken breast which was breaded in a panko crust with a small pile of pasta on the side (I swear I finished it in 3 bites). The sauce on top was good, and the pasta was to die for, but I just expected more for $13...it was like the same size of a half portion at Applebee's!! I also had a the seafood chowder, which was good, but again I received this huge bowl with about an inch of soup in it! My husband ordered the stuffed meatloaf, that was cold...but he ate it anyways because he is afraid to send food back. I tried his dish, and I'm sorry, but I could make much better meatloaf! My in-laws both got the fish fry, which was HUGE and only $10, but it was swimming in grease! I didn't try my sister in law or her bf's dish but they both looked small and unappetizing (mac and cheese and pasta/meatball). I may go here again, but I will most likely order something different....or just get a bowl of the pasta that came with my dish, because that was the best thing I ate! But this time around most of us left still hungry. —MinaLoy
2010-12-11 21:59:33 I went for dinner here on a saturday and i was impressed by the atmosphere and the wine selection. Not pricy at all. The food was great, I ordered a fish dish, it tasted just as good as it smelled. The highlight of the evening was the homemade bread pudding and knowing everything was freshly made on premises was an added plus to the whole experience. Overall a great time and I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a wholesome meal and a change of pace from all the chains and franchises around us. It was like going to a friends house and just unwinding with good food and drinks. On top of it, our table was personally greeted by the owner and he gave each of us a gift certificate, this was our first time here but will not be our last. I'm excited to try the brunch menu sometime soon. —kimberlyM
2011-01-13 22:09:22 The great potential here is wasted by a lack of attention to detail. Having just eaten at Shea's for dinner, on a whim with two other people, there were moments where we were baffled over the lack of customer service and care. While the food is nothing special (bland but not expensive) our table was dirty, our glasses were dirty, and our plates were frigid. My rice and bean dish was cold in two minutes after being smothered in pico. And concerning the food, the butter is great, but my caesar salad lacked any flavor whatsoever.
Another party waited so long to be greeted that they left their seats, and the kitchen was slow as well. The owner never seemed to notice. Additionally, the owner ran our food to us, but then promptly went to hang out with his friends in the corner rather than clearing our dirty appetizer dishes or asking if we needed anything more. It was also quite fun to see no beers listed anywhere despite the word "tap" being in the name. —NickE
2011-03-30 20:31:05 I visited Shea's with my wife and a friend of ours. Our server was excellent - highly attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. This, along with the nice contemporary decor, set the bar high - and the food did not rise to the occasion. My wife's paper-wrapped tilapia was creatively-prepared, but far fishier than any mild fillet should ever be. I ordered an artichokes/chicken french combination over linguine; the pasta was overcooked and the french sauce was little more than butter with a splash of wine. We used a Groupon and probably wouldn't return to pay full price. After visiting every eatery - some with great potential - to occupy this space in recent memory, I hope that Shea's can achieve critical mass. With a few tweaks and as much attention to detail in the cooking as there has been in the decorating and service, it could be very successful. —daverea

2011-05-04 18:50:27 Had a real nice time last weekend- OUr server was a riot- the homemade buffalo pierogis were delish and and the eggplant was amazing-especially with that creamy pasta on the side mmm I don't know where they're gonna put the piano but we'll definitely be interested in their upcoming piano bar —brandyC
2011-05-23 16:08:03 I've been here 3-4 times with my husband for dinner and it's one of our new favorite places in Rochester. To be honest, I didn't know it was there until a co worker told me she went there for dinner and loved it. So we decided to try it out. The decor inside is really nice and modern. The service has been good every time we've been there with fun and friendly waiters/waitresses. The menu has a lot to offer, and is really very affordable considering what they give you! Our first time there I got the Chicken Milanese (absolutely delicious breaded chicken breast with homemade pasta and sauce), and the portion was huge and it was only $13. My husband got the paper wrapped fish, and as 2 people coming from Boston where we could get fresh fish everywhere,(which is not the case in Rochester), this was very good!!! We loved our meal. The last time we went they had changed the menu to their Spring/Summer menu. We got the classic sampler as an appetizer (Came with mac and cheese, buffalo pirogies, and loaded fries); These were all delicious comfort food staples!! The mac and cheese had many sophisticated flavors while also staying close to the classic mac and cheese we all know, the buffalo pirogies were very different and good and spicy! yum! and the loaded cheese fries were just what you would expect, delicious! For our main meals I got the stuffed pork loan with mashed potatoes and my husband got the grilled mahi mahi with risotto, and again we loved every bit. We were too full to eat it all (as usual) so took the leftovers home. Overall this restaurant has EXCELLENT quality food and very low prices. Everything is house made, from their pasta to salad dressings, and they always have innovative specials. Great find and I definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good meal! —AndreaSpaniolas
2011-06-03 11:26:51 We stumbled across this place the other day and OMG... the MAC AND CHEESE CHOICES ARE AMAZING! I got the Cob mac and cheese and it made a really great dinner and a really great lunch the next day. Also, the bbq perogies were pretty great. —JenniferMason
