Past

The sport of football has been played at the University of Rochester since 1889. In this time, the team has compiled a record of 484-473-40 (.506). The football team also is responsible for the nickname "YellowJackets", which is used by all the University's teams. Legend has it that J. Howard Garnish, in one 1920's game, was tackled hard and kicked in the mouth. Reportedly he immediately jumped up and yelled "Go you Yellow Jackets". The name stuck, and has been used ever since.

Present

Former NFL player and Michigan State star Scott Greene took over leadership of the team after Mark Kreydt stepped down as head coach. Coach Greene brought with him Mike Foster, a well-known and highly respected local coach, and Jason Andersen, another former NFL player. In Coach Greene's first year the YellowJackets finished at 7-3, with a birth in an ECAC Bowl Game. This was the first winning season the YellowJackets have had since 2000, and their first post-season appearance in 19 years. Next year, the Jackets face a challenging schedule, as their first three opponents all participated in the NCAA tournament.

The Courage Bowl

In an effort to support the children of Camp Good Days, the U of R and St. John Fisher named their yearly game The Courage Bowl. Children from the camp are brought to the game and are honorary coaches, receiving a team jersey and a signed game ball. They also get to stand on the sidelines during the competition. Both teams visit the camp at some point before the game, visiting the kids and helping out with labor for the camp.
