- Palmyra (town), New York - Palmyra (village), New York |
Palmyra is a Town in the state of New York settled in 1789 and includes a Village by the same name. Palmyra is located in southwestern Wayne County, bordering the Rochester area's urban sprawl of the 1980s and '90s.
Joseph Smith Jr., founder of the Church of Latter-day Saints (LDS), claimed to have unearthed the Golden Tablets on Hill Cumorah near the village, and the first Book of Mormon was printed nearby in 1830. Interestingly, the LDS did not have a temple anywhere in the state until building one in Palmyra in 2000.
