Tipping

Talk Page

This page is where differences in opinions about RocWiki pages are resolved, and notes are left from one contributor to another related to content.

Second suggestion is to keep this page: I agree that the topic is not strictly related to Rochester and that there are lots of resources about it (good thing to have links to them, though), but as there are ongoing discussions about tipping among RocWiki members, I think a dedicated page is appropriate. —AndreaCogliati

2007-12-04 15:00:23   What exactly does this have to do with Rochester? There are many tipping guides already available on the internet such as [WWW]http://www.tipping.org

2007-12-04 15:09:58   Because a lot of talk is brought to restaurant posts about tipping. If the people who run this board find an issue with this, they can delete it. —MissGia

2007-12-04 20:37:33   Is that an invitation? Or just a tip? —MrPhil

2007-12-04 20:50:56   META-COMMENT: I think that this page is absolutely redundant, but since this debate will almost certainly flare up from time to time, I'd rather see it condensed into one page that is easily avoided than a whole series of restaurant and user pages that make it harder to review. —DaveMahon

2007-12-04 20:53:36   That was mostly why i did it, dave. I know it's a topic that comes up a lot so i put it all in one. Again, if you want it removed because you feel it does not belong, feel free. —MissGia

2007-12-05 09:17:03   META-COMMENT: I say keep it. First of all, tipping has its regional variations within the United States. Second, this isn't just a resource for people who lived in Rochester or the United States all their life. Debating the nuances can give insight to people living here from foreign countries. —JasonOlshefsky

2007-12-05 11:41:54   Ok cool. I thought that it was relevant enough...especially having been a waitress for so long and it seems like nobody in Rochester knows how to tip!!! :o) —MissGia

2007-12-05 15:21:59   My first suggestion is to move META-COMMENTs to this page: that's what talk pages are for.

2007-12-08 11:19:32   Mr Phil....was that needed? We're adults, we don't have to say things like that when it really has nothing to do with anything. BadFish- if you read above, it was already stated that this is not rochester specific, but tipping conversations spill over into reviews on restaurants, so they are keeping it to keep it all in one spot. —MissGia

2007-12-08 13:44:33   MrPhill - Was there a point in adding "nod-nod-wink-wink" besides creating another opportunity for you to create controversy? —RichChiavaroli

2007-12-08 13:48:45   Mr Phil- How old are you? Seriously? Because you are acting incredibly childish. This is supposed to be a place to voice opinions, not to make comments irrelevant to the topic.Rather than continuing to follow me around here and make comments that really aren't going anywhere, how about we act like adults and drop this so we can each enjoy this site for it's intended purposes. I know i did not sign onto here to get into random "arguments" with other Rochestarians, and hopefully you do not live a life so dull that you did! So let's just let it go, shall we? —MissGia

2007-12-08 15:06:03   Why don't we move the "meta-comments" to the Tipping/Talk page where they belong? —AndreaCogliati

2007-12-09 01:51:45   It may be a popular topic but this page is out of scope of the purpose of RocWiki, BadFish is correct. And I'm half tempted to be the bad guy here and just delete it :P —TravisOwens

2007-12-09 03:45:23   I moved your comments (TravisOwens) to the talk page. So ... reasons why it belongs on RocWiki: it applies regional tipping "accepted practices." And why not: tipping is a diffuse regional phenomenon in that what applies to Rochester probably applies to Albany, NY and Boston, MA as well; but perhaps not Atlanta, GA. Is it not part of RocWiki's purpose to educate people not-from-Rochester about Rochester? In this particular case, it is for people who have moved exactly once — those who don't know that tipping (like "tag sales" versus "garage sales" and "soda" versus "pop") vary region-to-region for reasons of law (i.e. minimum wage is different for servers; tax rates happen to be approximately 1/2 the tip rate) and custom (i.e. 15% is customary based upon (arguably) the pre-tax total bill). I welcome the comments and the ultimate advice to newcomers — particularly the debate between patrons who have not worked in food service versus food-service workers and their sympathizers. Can you refute these statements? Can you point to a resource that addresses this issue in exactly how the RocWiki users/debaters have agreed? (I think not.) Would you be willing to change the page name to "Regional-Rochester Tipping Standards"? —JasonOlshefsky
