In 1851 a group of Rochester businessmen formed The New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company, to serve as a regional telegraph operator. A short five years later, the business changed its name to The Western Union Telegraph Company, to signify the union of Western and Eastern telegraph services under it's control.
In 2006, Western Union discontinued all telegram service, leaving it as a financial services company.
