2008-11-23 01:37:34 Nathan - It is obvious to anyone that this is a shill comment. I think we can be about 99% sure that is is BS. I think it is a bad precedent to require such a high burden of proof that we let the wiki get cluttered with phony comments while we worry about some minute possibility that they might be legit. Let the community be self-regulating. If anyone actually thinks this comment has a reasonable possibility of being legit, please speak up here.
In the past, we have deleted BS comments that were less obvious than this, so I think we can feel safe in deleting this one. —EastSideStephen
2008-11-23 11:21:10 To be clear, what makes you think it is a shill comment? —BadFish
2008-11-23 12:51:18 The comment reads like ad copy. It's laid on pretty thick.
I know sometimes ad copy can be hard to pick out, but in this case it is as clear as day —EastSideStephen
2008-11-23 14:36:51 Perhaps we need to amend the rules here: Wiki Community/Offenses, as I didn't see anything saying it's okay to delete comments that we think are shills. For all we know, some guy actually loves this place.
I say if you think it's a shill comment, then call it out on that page with a comment of your own and let our visitors decide for themselves. —NathanHenderson
2008-11-23 16:06:42 I adding shilling to the Offenses page. Let me know what you think.
The problem with simple flagging the comment and letting users decide is that it will start to clutter things up eventually. If the wiki is full of flags and suspicious information, then it will appear intimidating to new users.
Those of us who have been around for a while know BS when we see it. It comes with experience. —EastSideStephen
2008-11-23 16:37:08 I've been around long enough, thankyouverymuch. I still think this is a slippery slope. Questionable comments that don't violate the bot spam or content restrictions should be flagged and removed by an administrator if necessary. I also don't think it's appropriate to change the Offenses page without discussing it with the RocWiki admin group. Let's continue the discussion on the Wiki Community/Mailing List. —NathanHenderson
