2008-12-13 10:24:47 The places look great (I work right by them) and I would even consider living there if: there was a Wegmans nearby (*cough* old Jillian's building *cough*), the Beebe Plant was torn down, I felt a little safer at night (ie. more traffic), and there was more of a community feel to the area. As it stands, The Mills are surrounded by a dilapidated power plant, Kodak's architectural nightmare (their brick block building, not the tower), and nothing. Can you smell success in the air? —BatGuano
2009-05-28 18:17:32 I just moved into this place over Memorial Day weekend. It's a great building but very unsafe and poorly managed.
My car was broken in and vandalized on Wednesday night, two days after I moved in. I filled a police report and they told me it’s a common occurrence in the area. I tried to talk to the property manager at the Mills to see if there’s anything they could do, instead they just told me it was my own problem. I was very disturbed by their nonchalant reaction and decided to terminate my lease after staying there for only 3 days!
I know things like this could happen everywhere and at anytime but it’s how the managements deal with it. These people had no sympathy for me. No one even said they’re sorry for what happened. I’ve lived in downtown for many years and have never had any problems. My previous loft apartment was on N. Water St. and they had secured garage parking with responsible property managers who hired 24-hour security guards when things got a little iffy in the area. I asked the management at the Mills if there is anything they could do and they said no.
The “gated” parking in the back is never locked. They are left wide open because bothered to program it. I mentioned that to the property manager when my car got broken and her only response was that the lot was never meant to be a secured lot and that the gate is only to keep cars out of the lot, not robbers.
In my option they could have at least started to lock the gate, put a sign out on the fence to warn potential robbers and distribute notice to residents to keep vigilance. The fact that they did nothing sends out a message to the wrong doers that the people here allow the kind of action to continue. More importantly, this shows that the management has no regard for the residents’ property and safety in the building.
Since I’ve already started ranting about this place I might as well go on about few other things I find difficult to accept. There are 67 apartments in the building and each of them is allowed exactly one parking spot on premise regardless how many bedrooms or how big your apartment is. Even if an apartment is double occupancy they will only give you one set of keys. If you have someone stay with you for more than 5 days they must be on the lease. You are not allowed to hang anything on the walls. All window treatments must have white backings. There are no pets allowed, not even cats. You must be out of the building by noon of the last day of your lease. This list goes on and on. It’s all in the 100-page lease they make you sign.
The point is if I paid for a place I should be allowed to live my own way as long as I’m paying the rent and respecting the property. I feel like these people are micro managing the tenants like little children.
I’m very disappointed that my original excitement was completed destroyed by this unfortunate event. I would not recommend this place to anyone. An area could be unsafe but nothing is worse than terrible and irresponsive management. There is a difference between what happens in an area and passive acceptance and unwillingness to change. Like many others, I had hoped for a revival of the high falls district. However, this is not possible without active support from everyone that is involved. Small incidents like this deter good renters and investors from coming into the area.

2010-06-25 22:40:20 I too had high hopes when I moved in. The place looked great , this was before all the trash arrived. The first month or so was quiet. Then the trash arrived below me. Loud sex many times a week, booming bass music for 4-6 hours. Loud talking / bass music at 3am. I complained more times than I have fingers and toes.I was told to call the police as nobody else complained.Like I need that b.s..Allot of the fellow residents are very loud, and blast their music when and as loud as they want. They are also slobs. There have been fights in the hallways broken lights ,some woman was pounding on my neighbor's door for an hour in May at 1 am.Pounding and screaming for an hour. There are always loud , drunk people in the halls every weekend. The windows leak very badly, surprising for such a new building. The cold air poors in in the Winter. You can hear everything ! I had to wear earplugs to sleep because the intox people from the now closed nightclub next door would scream and yell at 2AM.The thermostats are set to go up to 72 degrees in the Winter. Many sketchy people in the building. I told the office five times the light in the parking lot was out, been out since October . Still is not fixed. The only time they get excited is when someone wrote racist stuff in the hallway. They said the FBI was called, but I doubt it.Someone also carved racial stuff into the elevator door. —vargas37
