I'm boring—I typically get a totally plain steak sub (steak + bread and nothing else) and they've only messed up and given me cheese and/or other toppings once or twice. If you're going here for a quick lunch during the week, expect to wait a bit. It gets very crowded (and very loud) during lunch. (I've only been to the Mt. Hope location.) —RachelBlumenthal

2008-05-20 13:04:58   Love the hot subs here as they have some more "unusual" offerings beyond the typical philly cheesesteak or meatball subs you see offered at other sub places. I highly recommend the "chicken in the grass" or the fajita subs. —AdrienneDahler

Hope location better than the Linden Ave - the Linden location is larger, but lacks some menu items, and seems a bit more parsimonious in its toppings and production. But neither one is anything less than excellent - one of my favorite sub shops in the city. —ScottTaylor

2008-06-23 12:38:02   I have been to both locations and have never seen "self-service". You order the food and it is prepared for you as you wait; their counter staff is very service oriented and friendly. You can take away or eat in (there is no table service, if that is what Andrea is referring to, but the food definitely is not pre-prepared). Both locations are good. We mostly visit the Linden Ave location and use the drive-up window, too. Pricing is fair, portions are good, usually with enough left-over for a snack or lunch the next day (if you get a large sub and realize that it is more than a single portion!) —Tryntje

2008-07-20 15:58:26   The place to go for hot subs. Steak-in-the-grass, buffalo chicken finger, steak gyro, and my favorite - the Cuban. Small pieces of hot pork with ham, pickles, with provolone; and the spicy mustard is a nice touch. The fries are fresh and come in a cup.

Very underrated, and seems to only be known in circles of U of R and St. John Fisher students. Pellegrino's could seriously challenge DiBella's for sub supremacy, if only more people knew about it. —ZachSmalt

2008-07-30 17:37:26   Our first visit to a Pellegrinos - had lunch there today and enjoyed the Cheese and Potato Soup Wed Special - also shared a Philly Cheese-steak with my wife. Great lunch, very courteous and anxious to help staff. We will add this as a new stop to bring our adult kids when they visit with the grandchildren. —BradMandell

2008-11-23 10:28:46   I have only had good experiences here till recently. This incident occurred at the Mt Hope location. I had asked for a side of crushed red pepper for my sub. While applying it liberally to my sub, I realized that the crushed red pepper was sticking together. Thinking nothing of it, I finished my sub. A few minutes later, someone noticed things moving in the little cup used for the pepper. There were several worms in there....seriously. They were the color of the crushed red pepper (yellowish) and so, hard to locate immediately. We spoke to someone there and they refunded our meals and avoided us after that. I was too worried about the possible effects on myself to take any further action. While this may have been a one off incident, I am definitely not returning to that Pellegrino's again. So, examine your food! —OneLove

2009-04-04 17:38:04   I worked at Pell's when that happened, OneLove. Trust me. We were upset about that. We might have seemed like we were avoiding you because we were in the back dumping out everything that had crushed red pepper in it and soaking the containers in detergent and sanitizer. I'm talking gallons of dressings, sauces, seasoning mixtures and the like. As a restaurant professional, I can say that of all the places I worked at, Pellegrino's is not even close to the worst. I had no problem eating their food, and while the incident you referred to was extremely disgusting, I don't think it accurately reflects Pell's. But yeah, that was really gross. Those were maggots, which is weird because I never saw flies there. I gotta believe they came in from the distributer. Anyhoot, I was looking up the address of this place and read your comment. 2009-07-10 23:23:24   Pellegrino's is absolutely terrific. Every staff member is welcoming and helpful. The locale is simple and laid-back, but subtly charming and relaxing. The subs are the best around. The bread is superb for a sub-shop. Portions are very generous. Prices are low and the specials are a steal. My experiences here during 10 or so visits have been uniformly excellent. —Giffen

2009-08-05 14:54:41   Stopped at the Mt. Hope Pellegrino's on the way back from an appointment to get a sandwich- this was my first visit. I ordered the greek chicken wrap. I drove all the way back to work and went to eat it- only to discover that there was NO CHICKEN in the wrap whatsoever. No time to go back- lesson learned. —ShawnaLusk

2009-10-28 10:44:21   Decent sandwiches, but the service at Mt Hope is horrendous. The last 3 times we called or faxed in an order, they screwed it up. Twice, they simply put the turkey on a bare piece of bread with absolutely no topppings (no lettuce, no tomatoes, no mayo, no nothing), even though I specified on the order to put them on. —angusyoung

2009-11-09 05:30:47   Never been to the East Rochester location but the Mt. Hope location is a favorite among my friends and me. They can be inconsistent for SURE but it's still a great sandwich no matter what. —NickCassaro
