Nancy Kress is a Hugo Award winning local author, best known for her science fiction books. Born in Buffalo in 1948, Kress grew up in East Aurora, and went to college at SUNY Plattsburgh for elementary education. She later moved to Rochester in 1973. She moved away to work at various companies, and has taught at Clarion, SUNY Brockport, and elsewhere. In 2002, she moved back to Rochester.
