2005-03-20 12:12:11 I've tried the Chicken Makhani in many Indian restaurants form many different places and I must say the Raj Mahal has the best one I've tasted so far. If you go there, you MUST order the Chicken Makhani. The other dishes on the menu are about average and what you would expect for an Indian restaurant that is not too expensive. My advice is to go there during the all you can eat lunch buffet and eat until you pass out. The buffet has a good selection of dishes from the menu - always including, or course, the Chicken Makhani. — VijaySookdeo
2006-07-26 13:35:13 Lunch selection is small - could use more vegetable dishes. As a Chai addict, I'm satisfied here. Lunch patrons are seated at one extreme of the building while the buffet is at the other end - we joke that the food is cold by the time you get back to your table. Opinions from Indian friends: average food. —ChristineLeo
2006-08-31 12:22:52 I feel their food is going downhill...the buffet is small and not very interesting and there are never more than a few tables full at dinner. —EllenKelsey

2007-06-05 14:51:26 I did eat here once (first and only time I've had Indian food) and was not impressed. I had the all-you-can-eat lunch buffet, everything was served as a slurry type dish with tons of curry that didn't seem to add to the flavor (and I love what curry does for Thai food) and the buffet selection was very small. I've been told there is better Indian food but my experience here will make me think twice before giving Indian food a second chance. —TravisOwens
2007-06-05 16:22:53 @TravisOwens: you should definitely give Indian Food another chance. Try one of the three Indian restaurants in Henrietta: Taste of India, Tandoor of India, or Thali of India. —NathanHenderson
2007-07-16 14:04:43 Oh no! It's finally gone? Best Indian in western NY (or was at one time - maybe went downhill in last 10 years?). Anyone know what happened? (Is Raj still alive?) OK, so, what's now best Indian in Roch? —ExRochesterguy
2010-05-04 21:13:19 I believe Raj is still alive. As a child, my father worked there as a waiter. My favorite and pretty much only dish I ate was the Chicken Makhani. I loved this restaurant. Some might be better, but this one was well priced and a well known and liked place with many regulars in the area.
Also on to what Nathan said, there is also and Indian restaurant called India house - actually two, in the city and in Victor. —Sorofolio
2012-02-20 15:27:48 My grandpa is Raj Chhibber who owned The Raj Mahal! He is still living and he still makes chiken muckani and it is so good. His resturaunt got demolished 10 or 11 years ago. He still lives in Rochester, and goes by the space where his resturaunt used to be, on Monroe and Alexander Street. My mom and grandma worked there to, they wished that they still owned the resturaunt. I am one of three of his grandchildren, and I love his food. —Keenaword
2012-02-20 15:29:45 My grandpa probably knows your father sorfolio. Ask your father if he know Monika Chhibber. —Keenaword
2012-08-11 04:19:39 I remember going here on a field trip when I was in Middle or High School back in the 90's. The food was so good! I was sorely disappointed when I moved to Rochester in 2008 and discovered it had closed down. —ElliotFletcher
