2008-01-25 08:14:09   I have only eaten here once and won't again. The service is terrible. The waiter who I was avoiding at Taste of India works here now. The food is only mediocre. Now they are about to go under new ownership...that is a recipe for disaster. Taste of India's much nicer place to eat. Service is accomodating —SumeetGulati

2008-02-11 12:17:11   This place is not owned by the Thali owners anymore —SumeetGulati

2008-02-11 22:39:23   Sumeet, i am not surprised given how much Tandoor sucks now. How did you come across that information? —OneLove

2008-03-17 12:46:54   Sunday brunch starts at 11:30 - and is great value for money. Highlights included bhel with all the fixin's, fresh fruit, idli, dosa, the standard veg and non-veg menu favorites. —SmitaRao

2008-04-04 11:22:25   I was in for the lunchtime buffet a couple of weeks back and found the buffet both expansive and delicious — and I enjoyed not being packed in like sardines (aka, Thali's at lunchtime). Had no idea it wasn't owned by the Thali folks any longer — truly a good lunch experience. —LizDee

2008-04-12 14:12:17   I've eaten at a lot of different Indian restraunts, including most of those in the Rochester area, and Tandoor is my favorite. I've tried quite a few of there dishes and all were amazing. The naan is great. The kheer(rice pudding) is also spectacular. Their weekend buffet offers a great variety and it's pretty cheap. —TomWise

2008-05-15 16:01:47   Loved it when it was owned by the Thali people, but the food's not as good now. However...still better than most lunch places, particularly the buffet, if you're in a hurry and want a reasonably good meal. —kristinnen

2008-05-27 16:27:22   mmm, every time I eat here, I am quite happy with the results. They have a couple of indian beers. —EugeneCain

2008-06-20 16:02:56   This place has indeed gone downhill. Not sure if owners or management changed, but I dislike going there now. Everything from food to service is pretty poor these days. —owslystnly

2008-07-12 00:50:09   I agree, was a great place when they first opened. but it has changed. Food is not nearly as good. I have stopped going there. Too bad because it was close to work. —jennymarch

2008-08-15 13:33:14   Tried the lunch buffet and ala-carte dinner. Food was decent and buffet on weekday had a lot of options. The staff was very courteous and gave their dessert recommendations. Have not tried the weekend buffet yet. It may not be the best but it is a whole lot better than most of Indian restaurants around the country. —DeepBhatt

2008-12-23 00:09:10   the lunch buffet here is the best indian food in rochester hands down since pakistan house closed down. i am bengali so i like east indian meat... not the vegetarian menu. this place has great curried goat if you are lucky and good variety of food. masala tea is also wonderful and has a decent desert tray. good stuff —wahili69

2008-12-23 12:05:07   This was the 1st place I have ever tried Indian food before and I thoroughly enjoyed the lunch buffet. Obviously Im not the best judge, but as a person new to the cuisine, I would recommend Tandoor. —MrRochester

2009-01-03 01:42:29   This place is really bad. The food is alright but the staff is so rude. They have no etiquette's. I won't recommend anyone to eat here. We went for lunch buffet and the rude waiter after 2 mins was like fill your plates, we are closing the buffet. Why didn't he tell us at the door? Felt like a beggar. Will never go back there. Thali is always a safe and a better option. —Warren

2009-02-08 20:54:55   Never tried the buffet, but every time I've been here for dinner the food and service have been consistently good. The eggplant dishes are especially tasty! —AJH

2009-04-10 21:26:15   We've been going to Tandoor on Tuesday nights for the past few weeks. The dinner buffet is absolutely amazing. I think the staff is amazing as they were fast and prompt with clearing dishes. The Naan bread is exceptional. There are plenty of vegetarian options (Vegetable Mahkini is amazing!) as well as meat options. This is the best Indian buffet in Rochester hands down. The owner was walking around and welcoming each guest to the restaurant. Absolutely, Amazing! —ChefRamsey

2009-07-15 11:46:34   We enjoyed the lunch buffet. There is a wide range of choices. Everything that we tasted was excellent. Very reasonably priced for the value received. —MaxLent

2009-08-19 19:15:50   I'm seeing a lot of bad comments about the food and service

Just thought I'd comment that the food is pretty good and the service has always been great at this place... chef even came out and talked with me for a bit! And I'm a white, doofy college kid. Don't let the comments turn you off from this place, I eat here every once in a while and I don't think I've ever tried anything bad. It's not Jackson Heights, New York quality Indian food, but it's the best there is in Rochester. —NoahLeaf

2010-02-09 21:53:16   I was here a couple of weeks ago for their Sunday lunch buffet. The food and service has improved tremendously since the last time I was there (which was almost 2 years ago). I will be back! —OneLove

2010-03-11 06:58:23   I'm surprised by the negative comments. I've never posted before, but felt compelled to balance things out a bit. My family loves this place. The food is delicious and well-presented and the buffet is an incredible value. We consider ourselves connoisseurs as we happen to have a lot of Indian friends and have eaten homemade Indian food at their homes, plus we've visited all of the Indian restaurants in Rochester. While they all have merits (and we should be thankful to HAVE so many Indian places!), Tandoor is by far our favorite, not only because of the food but because of the staff. They are hard-working, friendly, and thoughtful. They do seem to be reserved at first, but I think it's just their personality. We love taking our kids there - not to stereotype, but in our experience Indian people LOVE children and really go out of their way to make them feel special. The staff at Tandoor is no exception. I can't tell you how many times they've come to our table to give the kids a smile and talk to them. They've even been known to drop off a small dish of pistachio ice cream for our son or a special rosewater drink for our daughter (and no charge, of course). It's really lovely. Good food, good value, good people. I encourage anyone to give this place a try.

2010-03-31 18:32:54   I think this place has changed ownership a few times.. We've been there twice in the last 4 months and I think it's fabulous. Their buffet has a lot of interesting dishes that I don't see at the other Indian buffets in town. The food is hot and fresh and in my opinion delicious. Service seemed fine - the naan came out quickly and they were constantly refilling our waters. I personally love it and go back every time i have the chance. —AutumnMarie

2010-06-02 12:24:28   We have had excellent experiences here at the Tuesday nite buffet, lunch/weekend buffets. We even brought a huge group of colleagues from India who also loved it! They were here 10 weeks and went at least twice a week. If they gave it a stamp of approval, then it is worth trying. The chef came out and took his photo with us so we could send it to the guys in India. I eat primarily from the vegetarian side and they have so many dishes, you are full before trying half of them. The salad is very tasty, and the dessert selection is awesome. I also appreciate that the spicy food is pretty spicy, not for the faint of heart on some days. Other Indian buffets are so bland. If I could make Tandoor chicken like that, I'd have had a long line of men vying for my hand in marriage. That stuff is smoky, flavorful and moist. —LisaRuns

2010-07-21 22:04:38   Hands down the best Indian buffet. We have tried everyone except (Tandoor of Flame), but none have even compared to this place. The service is amazing. The owner is very friendly and speaks with his clientele. The food is always hot and fresh. They always mix up their dishes. Just the other night they had Chicken Wings that were absolutely amazing. We frequent this place at least twice a month! —ChefRamsey

2010-10-16 16:51:18   The food is pretty good, but you basically have to tackle a server to get any sort of service whatsoever. Every time I have gone, I've had to get up, and tap someone on the shoulder, or wave like a maniac anytime I needed anything, our order taken, water, more rice, the check, anything. —lettuchi

2011-03-25 17:59:52   Definitely the best buffet, my 2nd favorite indian place in town. Bombday Chaat is my fav, but they have a small menu compared to Tandoor —jberna

2011-08-20 23:00:37   This place has only gotten better since it's inception. They have renovated inside regards to the buffet layout. It's absolutely stunning and the food only gets better! —ChefRamsey

2011-10-22 14:54:26   This place is awesome because this new owner and his extended family that works with him, are seasoned restauranteurs.

The chilli-chicken, if you like hot food, is absolutely outstanding. His chilli-meatballs is similarly amazing. The dals and kadhis are authentic, and I have not found anything better outside my mother's kitchen. The goat curry is excellent. Goat is an acquired taste, I know, but it is very authentic to the people accustomed to Indian food. The seafood xacuti (pronounced sha-koo-ti) is the best I have ever had - which is surprising because it is a Goan dish; I am surprised to find it at a north-Indian/Punjabi eatery. But, it is an altogether pleasant surprise.

The cooks clearly love what they are doing, and the people are genuine and engaging. I eat there a lot, and when I do, I feel as if I have gone back home to a village in Punjab, and that I am eating home cooked food made by people who care about me. The service is excellent. I look forward to not just eating there, but also to the friendly banter with the owners. —kalidanpu

2012-01-06 21:15:57   Recently renovated the entire inside and this is hands down the most amazing Indian Restaurant in Rochester. I have been to every one and I keep coming back to this place. The service is wonderful. Their Chicken Mahkini is out of this world. They have a great selection of meat options and vegetarian options on the buffet. No other place comes even close!!!! —ChefRamsey

2015-09-28 14:50:07   We go to the location in Perinton once a month for the lunch buffet. The restaurant is always bright and clean and the staff is very welcoming. They rotate the entree selection enough that there is always something new to try, not the same things over and over. —jasons

2016-07-07 13:08:44   Just ate the lunch buffet at the Fairport location and it was 5 star, some of the best Indian food I've ever had. Place was clean, the dishes were well label as in not just the name, but what's in it. Would absolutely go there again plus the fact it's in this old mini mall from the 80s is a fun and quirky site to see, like stepping into the past. —travisowens
