The Rochester Argentine Tango community has been active since 1996, when it started with 4 people in Fairport NY. Today, it numbers hundreds of people of all ages, nationalities, and walks of life.

In 1997 the Sunday Argentine Tango group moved to DancEncounters at 215 Tremont St in Rochester, where it continues to this day, run by Barbara Warren. Every week there is a fundamentals lesson, taught by Barbara, to help newcomers get started. The Lesson and dance cost $8. The second Saturday of most months there is a gala milonga with a guest teacher and DJ. There is a parking lot in front of the building. In 2000 Jan Bares, one of the original group members, started an Argentine Tango night on Wednesdays. Currently named Midnight Tango, the Milonga is presently located at Clarissa's Jazz on Clarissa St Jan teaches a beginner lesson at 7 pm and a more advanced lesson at 8pm. The Tango Cafe on Gregory Street offers classes and a milonga on Thursday evenings. Classes run from 7 - 8:30,. The milonga runs until 11 pm and is free for those taking classes. The cost is $5 for non - students.
