A group of art students. c. 1891-1893 The Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics' Association was formed in 1847 by the combining of the Rochester Anthenaeum and the Mechanics Literary Association.

1829 The Athenaeum is organized in Rochester, by Nathaniel Rochester. The organization charged members five dollars per year to hear lectures by some of America's best-known orators such as Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Horace Greeley, and Ralph Waldo Emerson.

1836 Mechanics' Literary Association founded by and for the 'meddling class'.

1847 Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics' Literary Association is formed by the combination of the two organization.

1849 Responsible for the Corinthian Hall.

1891 Merged with the Mechanics Institute to form a trade school, which eventually led to the establishment of RIT.
